Pay Scale Certified Master’s Degree or Higher; preferably in psychology, sociology, counseling or related field. A A Licensed Professional Counselor is preferred. Eleven Months (210 days)
Certified Salary Scale SUMMARY:
The Mental Health/Social Emotional Counselor will be responsible for providing services related to the delivery of mental health care to the assigned caseload at the designated school locations and will provide consultation services to the school staff to support the overall mental health goals of the school system. The Mental Health/Social Emotional Counselor will collaborate with system-level and school administrators, student service director, system social worker, and school counselors to coordinate, facilitate, and implement mental health support services across the system. The position will provide emotional support and assess, develop, and implement system wide initiatives to address social-emotional wellness. The focus will be on building students’ capacity for academic success and positive social and emotional well-being 1.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide mental health services to students and crisis interventions as needed. Maintain regular contact with the parent/guardian of each student served. Furnish required reports to DCFS, legal system and other involved agencies. Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings and student support team meetings at the schools as needed. Provide consultation for school staff regarding mental health issues including classroom observation and appropriate service determination. Collaborate with administrators, counselors, and teachers to support schools in social emotional learning implementation and address social-emotional wellness. Build and participate in the implementation of a continuum of social-emotional services to support all students within a school, including direct support of student intervention. Demonstrate and maintain productive and positive interpersonal skills. Promote professional conversation and reflective thinking to impact teacher effectiveness. 2 Engage in continuous social emotional learning and build capacity to train school staff in those practices. Develop support groups for students as needed. Participate in the collection of mental health information and student outcomes data to be used for monitoring the overall performance and effectiveness of services provided. Maintain required records and maintain appropriate documentation. Liaison to and for community resources; next steps involving short term and/or long term therapy or intervention; advocacy. Provide small group mental health counseling (i.e. anger/stress management, girl/boy issues, self-esteem, grief, relationships). Address mental health and mental illness. Address risky behaviors (i.e. alcohol/drug use). Address depression and anxiety (i.e. suicide ideation). Address abuse (i.e. physical, emotional, sexual). Maintains a professional appearance and demeanor. Perform other duties as assigned. 3.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Certification in mental health counseling is preferred. Specialization in school-based mental health counseling is preferred. Must possess a strong knowledge of the common treatments for school-aged children and possess the skills necessary to facilitate positive change in a school environment. Strong communication, facilitation, coaching, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills. 4.
