Counseling and Psychological Services Job Description The Mental Health Therapist plays a vital role in supporting the mental and emotional well-being of Maryville University students through high quality, inclusive, and evidence-based care. As part of the integrated Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) team, the therapist provides short-term individual counseling, group therapy, crisis response, and psycho educational outreach. This position actively contributes to a campus environment that fosters personal growth, emotional resilience, and holistic success. Aligned with Maryville University’s 8 Dimensions of Wellness and the mission of the MaryWELL initiative, the Mental Health Therapist will engage students across all learning ecosystems-including traditional, online, and graduate populations-through a model that centers wellness, belonging, and access. The therapist will also collaborate closely with academic departments, student success professionals, and university partners to ensure comprehensive, wraparound support for students’ mental health needs. This role is ideal for a licensed mental health professional who is passionate about working in a student-centered environment and is committed to equity-minded, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care. Formal Policy-Setting Responsibilities
Collaborate with the Senior Mental Health Therapists and SHCS leadership to develop, implement, and refine counseling policies and procedures that support ethical, accessible, and student-centered Ensure all clinical services adhere to professional ethical guidelines, legal requirements, and industry best practices, including those set by the American College Health Association(ACHA), American Counseling Association (ACA), National Association of Social Workers (NASW), and state licensure boards.
Contribute to the review and revision of university-wide mental health and wellness policies, including crisis response protocols, referral pathways, and care coordination practices.
Provide input on clinical documentation standards, privacy protocols (HIPAA/FERPA), and compliance measures, ensuring alignment with accreditation standards and institutional priorities.
Support the development of policies that promote trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and inclusive mental health services, in alignment with Maryville’s Access and Opportunity Strategic Plan and MaryWELL frameworks.
Routine Decision-Making
Determine appropriate therapeutic interventions and individualized treatment plans based on clinical assessment, student goals, presenting issues, and short-term counseling models.
Evaluate the severity and urgency of mental health concerns and, when necessary, initiate crisis response procedures in consultation with SHCS leadership and/or Public Safety.
Make informed decisions regarding mental health referrals, considering the student’s need for specialized or long-term care, availability of local or telehealth providers, and the student’s insurance coverage or financial accessibility.
Exercise sound clinical judgment on when to break confidentiality, in accordance with state and federal laws and ethical guidelines (e.g., imminent risk to self or others, abuse, or court-mandated disclosures).
Identify themes and emerging needs within the student population and collaborate with SHCS staff to develop relevant outreach, prevention programming, and psychoeducational events.
Select topics and delivery methods for mental health education initiatives, determining the most effective formats (e.g., workshops, support groups, tabling, digital campaigns) based on campus needs and engagement data.
Contribute to case consultation and clinical decision-making within a collaborative team environment, offering input on care coordination, treatment recommendations, and service planning.
Determine appropriate boundaries of care within the short-term counseling model and make ethically informed decisions regarding treatment continuation, referrals, and case closure.
Formal Supervisory Responsibility
Provide training, mentorship, and clinical guidance to selected Counseling Center graduate-level interns or practicum students ,in accordance with licensure board standards and departmental Assist in the onboarding and day-to-day oversight of work-study students or peer wellness assistants assigned to support outreach, administrative tasks, or program delivery within SHCS.
Collaborate with the Senior Licensed Personal Counselor and SHCS leadership to ensure that all trainees and student workers are supported through meaningful developmental experiences and that their responsibilities align with ethical and institutional standards.
May be asked to co-facilitate training sessions or workshops for staff, interns, or student leaders on relevant mental health topics, case documentation, or referral practices.

In-depth understanding of mental health counseling theories, evidence-based practices, and ethical guidelines, including professional codes of conduct for Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs), Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs), and related fields.
Thorough knowledge of crisis intervention strategies and risk assessment tools, including suicide prevention, safety planning, and referral to higher levels of care when Familiarity with mental health needs specific to college students, including transitional stress, identity development, trauma, substance use, and academic-related distress.
Awareness of current trends in college student mental health, including culturally responsive care, digital well-being, stigma reduction strategies, and trauma-informed clinical approaches.
Understanding of clinical documentation standards and regulatory compliance, including HIPAA, FERPA, and mandated reporting requirements.
Knowledge of campus systems and student support networks, including familiarity with academic policies, Student Life resources, and university referral processes.
Understanding of local and regional mental health systems, including outpatient providers, hospitals, specialty care services, and telehealth platforms available to college students.
Familiarity with the use of electronic health record systems (e.g., Medicat) and comfort with maintaining timely, accurate, and legally compliant clinical Knowledge of wellness and prevention models, such as the 8 Dimensions of Wellness, and how mental health integrates into holistic student well-being initiatives.
Required skills or abilities
Excellent clinical skills in providing individual and group counseling services, with the ability to apply short-term, evidence-based approaches tailored to the needs of a diverse student population.
Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills, including the ability to build rapport, foster trust, and engage with students from various
identities and backgrounds.
Demonstrated ability to maintain strict client confidentiality and uphold ethical, legal, and professional standards, particularly related to HIPAA, FERPA, and mandated reporting.
Empathy, cultural humility, and sensitivity to student experiences, including those related to race, gender identity, sexuality, disability, mental health stigma, and Advanced crisis management and clinical decision-making skills, with the ability to assess risk, de-escalate situations, and implement appropriate interventions or referrals Effective organizational and time management skills, including the ability to manage a dynamic caseload, documentation, outreach, and participation in campus events or committees.
Initiative and creativity in designing and delivering mental health programs, workshops, and campaigns that align with wellness priorities and engage a broad student Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of an integrated wellness team, contributing to case consultations, planning efforts, and shared service Technological proficiency, including comfort with electronic health records (preferably Medicat), Microsoft Office tools, and digital wellness platforms.
Sound clinical judgment, adaptability, and problem-solving abilities, especially when navigating complex student needs, interdisciplinary referrals, and evolving campus demands.
Formal education
Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a closely related field is required.
Must hold current and active licensure in the state of Missouri as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or equivalent behavioral health license.
Eligibility to provide supervision to graduate-level interns or provisionally licensed clinicians is preferred.
Additional certifications or specialized training in trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), or culturally responsive practices are strongly encouraged.
A demonstrated commitment to continuing education and professional development in the fields of student mental health, wellness, and higher education counseling is expected.
