The Counselor is a provisionally Licensed Professional Counselor (P-LPC) and holds a Master’s Degree in counseling, psychology, or mental health. This individual will provide individual, couples, family, crisis, consultation, and group counseling services to assist individuals in achieving more effective personal, social, emotional, and psychological development and adjustment to the college atmosphere. Appropriately refers clients to campus resources or agencies, non-counseling conceals. This individual will contribute to the educational mission of the University through a variety of activities devoted to prevention, intervention, and consultation, and will participate in a 24-hour emergency on-call rotation and occasional evening or weekend activities. Also, she/he will possess specific training and experience working with diverse populations, including, but not limited to, transfer, first-year, first-generation, commuter, International, and LGBTQIA students, as well as students of different ethnicities and immigration histories. This individual will also assist in various programs (e.g., residence hall staff trainings, peer education, etc.), plan and implement psycho-educational programs in areas such as stress management, family difficulties, adjustment problems, and other issues relevant to the growth and development of students. Examples of Duties Provide counseling services to JSU students and consultations with faculty and staff. Maintain ethical standards and adhere to the ACA Code of Ethics. Provide documentation of daily therapeutic actions. Staff cases with internal clinical staff and the Director. Assist with the implementation of annual events. Provide outreach presentations to the campus and local community. Participates in the on-call rotation for the center. Typical Qualifications Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or a closely related field. At least two (2) years of experience in counseling. Must have abilities and attributes that enable effective representation of mental health issues in the community, and effective interaction with and the ability to gain the respect of counseling staff, colleagues, administrators, faculty, staff, parents, students, etc. Must hold an appropriate Mississippi state provisional license (i.e., P-LPC, LMSW). Must have graduate-level training in clinical and professional functioning, such as diagnosis and assessment, counseling theory and practice, ethical issues, supervision, diversity, and research. Must have evidence of involvement and commitment to educational and professional development. Must be knowledgeable about the counseling and mental health field. Must be able to provide counseling services to individuals experiencing mental health and interpersonal violence issues. Must be able to work in a fast-paced setting. Must be able to work well under pressure and handle crisis situations. Must be able to effectively communicate. Must be able to supervise staff and train internship students. Must have good public speaking skills. Must be knowledgeable about the state and federal laws, statutes, and procedures for reporting to regulatory agencies, along with the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics. Must be able to work with first-year, first-generation, commuter, international, and LGBTQIA students. Must be able to plan and implement various programming.
