Position Overview:
The Clinical Counselor III provides therapeutic behavioral health services to patients and families as part of an interdisciplinary team. This role focuses on individual therapy, treatment planning, treatment evaluation, group therapy, and therapeutic support for patients. Responsibilities include intakes, safety checks, coordination with departments and external services, and ensuring a safe, therapeutic environment for behavioral health patients. Clinical Counselors follow UNC Health Appalachian policies and all applicable regulations, working within their professional scope and involving other providers as needed.
Compensation is commensurate upon education, experience, certification, and internal equity. Hiring compensation ranges start from $30.96 /hour for fully licensed applicants. Compensation ranges vary depending on level of licensure.

Compensation is commensurate upon education & experience
- range is $30.
96 /hour or more (depending on education & experience). Benefits begin the first of the month following 60 days of employment from the new hire orientation date. This position is a non-exempt position.

Key Responsibilities:
Provide individual and group therapy to behavioral health patients.
Conduct patient assessments and develop individualized treatment plans.
Participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning conferences and team meetings.
Support intake processes, safety checks, and therapeutic environment protocols.
Coordinate with departments and external services to support holistic patient care.
Evaluate patient progress and adjust treatment approaches as needed.
Follow professional standards, hospital policies, and all federal, state, and local regulations.
Position Requirements:
“Full Licensure” is preferred but “Provisional Licensure will be considered and encouraged to apply”
Minimum Education:
Clinical Counselor II:
Master’s in Human Services field and a provisional license or pursuing licensure.
Full licensure must be completed within 4 years of hire as Clinical Counselor III.
Clinical Counselor III:
Master’s or Doctorate in Human Services field with full licensure:
LCSW, LPC, LPA, LMFT, LCAS
Experience:
Minimum of two years of relevant experience preferred.
Required Registration/License/Certification:
See education section for appropriate license level.
Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association required at time of hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
Knowledgeable in the delivery of safe and effective therapeutic services within regulatory and policy guidelines.
Skilled in behavioral health assessment, planning, and implementation.
Experience with therapy for geriatric and adult populations preferred.
Familiarity with a range of therapeutic treatment models.
Demonstrated excellence in customer service and multidisciplinary teamwork.
