Summary:

The Mobile Crisis Management Peer Support Specialist, as a Paraprofessional, provides peer-based support and assistance to beneficiaries experiencing mental health or substance use crises, under the supervision of a Licensed Professional (LP) or Qualified Professional (QP). This role leverages lived experience to offer hope, encouragement, and practical support, contributing to the MCM team’s first-responder model. The Peer Support Specialist ensures compliance with NC Medicaid Clinical Coverage Policy 8A and supports the implementation of the beneficiary’s Person-Centered Plan (PCP).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide in-person peer support during crisis interventions, sharing lived experience to build rapport, reduce stigma, and promote recovery (page 35 of NC Medicaid Clinical Coverage Policy 8A). Assist with de-escalation and safety planning, under LP/QP direction, to stabilize beneficiaries in community settings. Support beneficiaries in navigating community resources (e.g., recovery groups, social services) as part of crisis resolution. Reinforce coping strategies and self-management skills outlined in the beneficiary’s PCP. Document interventions in service notes, including date, purpose, intervention details, duration, and effectiveness, per Subsection 5.8.2 (page 8 of NC Medicaid Clinical Coverage Policy 8A). Participate in 24/7 first-responder coverage, responding to crisis calls as part of the MCM team (page 35 of NC Medicaid Clinical Coverage Policy 8A). Support telehealth follow-up activities (e.g., joining virtual consultations) under LP/QP supervision, per Policy 1-H (Attachment A, page 30 of NC Medicaid Clinical Coverage Policy 8A). Adhere to individualized supervision plans, reviewed annually, and comply with client rights and HIPAA regulations (Subsections 5.6 and 7.1, pages 6, 11 of NC Medicaid Clinical Coverage Policy 8A). Participate in all required training and education as mandated by the specific service line and clinical coverage policy. Available for on-call shifts. Ability to travel to community locations and respond to crises in potentially unpredictable environments. Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not oversee staff.

(Subsection 6.3.2, page 11 of NC Medicaid Clinical Coverage Policy 8A). Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) credential or equivalent training in peer support, meeting Paraprofessional status as defined in 10A

Minimum of one year’s experience in providing crisis management services in the following settings: assertive outreach, assertive community treatment, emergency department or other service providing 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week, response in emergent or urgent situations; and 20 hours of training in appropriate crisis intervention strategies within the first 90 days of employment. Lived experience with mental health or substance use recovery; minimum of 1 year of experience in peer support or related roles. Training in crisis de-escalation or trauma-informed care, preferred. Experience working in community-based crisis services, preferred. Skills/Abilities Ability to share lived experience effectively, basic crisis intervention skills, and knowledge of recovery-oriented practices; strong interpersonal skills. Ability to write clearly and legibly; Schedule flexibility to meet the needs of beneficiaries; Knowledge of Behavior Management techniques, Substance Abuse counseling/support, and Recreation Leadership; Ability to provide guidance and training of life skills; Ability to implement Individualized Treatment Plans and monitor progress towards goals; Ability to interact effectively including oral and written communications; A pleasant, positive nurturing personality who identifies the importance of the essence of home and enhancement of life. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Valid NC driver’s license, reliable transportation, and personal vehicle insurance coverage. Current license or certification must be maintained if applicable. CADC preferred.
