Job Description

Job Summary:

Responsible for applying unique knowledge and skills to students and their families who are referred to assist in the prevention and remediation of problems in attendance, behavior, health, and adjustment.

Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Participates in school-based educational support teams (ESTs), Section 504 plan meetings, individual education program (IEP) meetings and Coordinated Services Planning (CSPs) for identified students to engage in problem solving with teams.
  • Assists with the development of crisis prevention and intervention plans.
  • Works with the school’s crisis team to respond to emergencies.
  • Serves on the school’s behavior threat assessment team.
  • Supports school-based teams with suicide screenings as needed.
  • Engages in appropriate assessment activities, including social and developmental history, to assist in the identification of needs of students exhibiting social/emotional and/or behavioral difficulties, mental health concerns or developmental delays.
  • Assists IEP teams in developing educationally relevant goals and objectives and in identifying counseling services needed to make progress on goals when relevant.
  • Assists staff in education regarding how mental health and trauma can impact behavior.
  • Provides recognition of a variety of student accomplishments and positive behaviors and ability to utilize coping skills and mental health techniques.
  • Provides support to instructional personnel in the progress monitoring of interventions, IEPs and goals for students who are experiencing social/emotional and/or behavioral difficulties.
  • When needed, uses CPI techniques to maintain student and staff safety.
  • Plan and conduct appropriate mental health interventions to include short-term solution focused counseling services for students using evidence-based counseling interventions.
  • Teaches, models, supports and monitors skills that allow a student to engage in their school day. Examples of skills include, but are not limited to, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision making and self-awareness.
  • Provides educationally relevant individual and group sessions according to a student’s behavior plan or individualized education plan (IEP) addressing identified areas need, which may include positive behavior supports, mental health supports, social emotional learning, social skills instructions and emotional regulation.
  • Collects progress monitoring data towards student goals and reports on student progress at required intervals.
  • Serves as a liaison between the school and community-based agencies and facilitates resources and referrals for students and f-families.
  • Helps identify barriers to student attendance and engages parents in implementing interventions to maximize student attendance.
  • Maintains appropriate, accurate and complete student records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations.
  • Submits Medicaid billing documentation for related services within designated time frames.
  • Maintains confidentiality in all matters pertaining to students, families and others.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Education Requirement:

    Masters degree in social work, school psychology, mental health counseling or other related field.

  • Preferred qualifications:
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) certification in Vermont or Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) from VT Board of Allied Mental Health or other related certification to be approved by the Director of Student Services
  • Previous experience working with students in a school setting
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
  • Upper body mobility required to sufficiently assist students with disabilities with physical needs, healthcare procedures, and assistive technology devices.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull and/or carry up to 25 pounds on a frequent basis.

If fully certified in CPI, may be required to physically restrain parties involved in a conflict.
