The Mental Health Probate Court Case Manager plays a critical role in the probate court system, overseeing and managing cases involving individuals with mental health issues. This position requires an individual with deep compassion, attention to detail, and the ability to navigate complex legal and healthcare systems. The Case Manager serves as an advocate for clients, ensuring they are provided with appropriate care, treatment, and legal protection throughout the court process. The role involves collaboration with judges, attorneys, healthcare providers, social services agencies, and other stakeholders to support clients’ mental health and legal needs. This position reports to the Probate Judge or his/her designee (Chief Clerk). Salary Information Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.

  • Nature of Work Case Management:
Caseload Management:

Oversee and manage a diverse caseload of individuals with mental health challenges within the probate court system. This includes conducting initial assessments, ongoing evaluations, and developing comprehensive case plans for each client. Ensure that all case activities are documented thoroughly, accurately, and in a timely manner.

    Initial Assessments & Case Plans:

    Conduct detailed interviews and assessments with clients to identify their mental health needs, personal history, and overall well-being. Develop personalized case plans that address mental health treatment, social services, and legal needs. Regularly reassess cases to ensure the plans remain effective and aligned with clients’ evolving needs.

      Information Coordination:

      Work closely with healthcare providers, medical professionals, social workers, and other key stakeholders to gather all necessary information and documentation for each case. This involves ensuring that all reports, medical records, and other documentation are complete and up-to-date for court proceedings.

      Client Advocacy:
        Client Representation:

        Act as a strong advocate for clients, ensuring their rights are respected throughout the probate process. Provide clients with the necessary support and guidance, addressing concerns and ensuring they understand the proceedings and their legal rights.

          Communication Facilitation:

          Facilitate open and clear communication between clients, their families, and service providers. Assist in resolving any misunderstandings or conflicts that may arise between these parties. Help ensure that clients are kept informed about their case status and understand their legal and mental health treatment options.

            Empowerment and Support:

            Empower clients to actively participate in their own care and legal processes. Provide emotional and psychological support during challenging legal proceedings, ensuring clients feel heard and respected.

            Court Preparation and Attendance:
              Legal Document Preparation:

              Prepare, file, and organize necessary legal documents, petitions, and reports for the probate court, ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal laws. This includes preparing reports that outline the status of cases and presenting well-supported recommendations for care and treatment.

                Court Hearings & Testimony:

                Attend probate court hearings as required, providing testimony and case updates to the judge. Present relevant facts, medical evaluations, and other case information to support the court’s decision-making process. Respond to questions or requests for additional information from the court, ensuring clarity and accuracy.

                  Client Court Preparation:

                  Ensure that clients are informed, prepared, and supported for court appearances. Provide guidance on what to expect in court and ensure clients are comfortable navigating the proceedings. Work to reduce any anxiety or fear related to the court process by offering reassurance and assistance.

                  Collaboration and Coordination:
                    Multidisciplinary Team Collaboration:

                    Work collaboratively with mental health professionals, social service agencies, law enforcement, and legal professionals to ensure a holistic approach to each client’s care. Coordinate with all relevant parties to create a seamless network of support for clients.

                      Liaison Role:

                      Serve as a liaison between the court, clients, families, and external agencies. Facilitate effective communication and follow-up to ensure all stakeholders are aligned and informed on case progress.

                        Resource Connection:

                        Connect clients with appropriate services and resources, including mental health care, housing assistance, legal services, and community support. Assist clients in navigating these resources to ensure they receive the necessary services in a timely manner.

                        Compliance and Reporting:
                          Regulatory Compliance:

                          Ensure that all case activities comply with relevant laws, regulations, and ethical standards. Maintain a deep understanding of federal, state, and local mental health laws and probate court procedures.

                            Case Documentation & Confidentiality:

                            Maintain accurate, detailed, and confidential records for all cases. This includes keeping thorough notes, preparing case reports, and ensuring all information is securely stored in accordance with privacy laws and regulations.

                              Progress Reporting:

                              Prepare and submit regular reports to the court and relevant stakeholders on case status, outcomes, and any updates or changes. These reports should be clear, concise, and based on comprehensive information, helping the court make informed decisions.

                              Minimum Qualifications Required Education:
                              • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Criminal Justice, or a related field is required.

                              A Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, or a related field is preferred.

                              Required Experience:
                              • Minimum of 3 years of experience in case management, social work, or a related field, ideally within a mental health or legal setting.

                              Experience in working with individuals with mental health challenges in the court system is a significant advantage.

                              Required Skills:
                                Mental Health Knowledge:

                                A strong understanding of mental health diagnoses, treatments, and available services. Knowledge of mental health laws and the ability to navigate complex mental health and legal systems.

                                  Court Procedures:

                                        Technology Proficiency:

                                        Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and case management software. Comfort with learning and utilizing new technologies to streamline case management tasks.

                                        Other Requirements:
                                        • A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for travel to client visits and court appearances.
                                        Preferred Qualifications:
                                          Licensure:

                                          Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or similar certification is highly preferred.

                                            Legal Environment Experience:

                                            Experience working in a legal or court environment, especially in probate or mental health courts, is a significant asset.

                                              Bilingual Abilities:

                                              Proficiency in a second language is a plus, as it helps ensure accessibility for non-English speaking clients.

                                              Physical Requirements:
                                              • Ability to sit for extended periods and perform computer-based work.
                                              • Ability to travel locally for client visits, home visits, and court appearances Special Requirements Must hold a valid Alabama Driver’s License and maintain a driving record that is acceptable to the Authority’s insurance carrier.

                                              Must maintain liability coverage on personal vehicles. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule which may include evenings and/or weekends.
