This position oversees and manages the daily music ministry of the church’s operations, which includes, but is not limited to overseeing volunteers and contractors; working with the different ministries to ensure they carry out their defined mission and ensure the effective use of resources. Strong leadership skills are essential. This leadership role requires strategic planning, multi-tasking abilities, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to effectively manage and lead teams and projects. The Minister of Music shall report directly to the Pastor and the Personnel Committee of the Trustees. Summary of Duties & Responsibilities Coordinate music selections and submit weekly song selection to staff for weekly review. Directs and applies music to accompany worship services. Coordinate and participate in all choir rehearsals (i.e., youth, adult, children, etc.) Make certain that choirs and/or music arrangements are in place for all engagements which have been approved by the Pastor. Attend all worship celebrations including but not limited to, Sunday services and Wednesday Worship as applicable, scheduled revivals and special services designated by the Pastor. Develop music ministries and programs for children and teens. These ministries and programs will be featured in congregational worship periodically. Recruit necessary musicians (i.e., drummer, pianist, organist, guitar, etc.) to accompany the music ministry for all required services. The Minister of Music does not have the authority to hire or fire musicians but may make recommendations to the Pastor. Recruit and maintain choir members for the weekly Sunday worship service. Lead the music ministry in adopting at least one mission project per year. Develop the individual voices of the choir so that the full potential of the music ministry can be realized. Spend time with individual members of the choir developing individual voices. Timely address unacceptable choir behavior that occurs in worship service (i.e., phone usage, talking, gum chewing, etc.). Conduct annual assessment and selection of music ministry Section Leaders (i.e., choir, musicians). Hold appropriate meetings with Section Leaders as applicable. Be aware of all current workshops/conventions at least annually that feature music training and development for churches. Provide annual recommendations for participation in such workshops/conventions. Prepare the music ministry for at least 1 annual concert per year. (i.e., Church anniversary on the 3rd Sunday in May). Work with the Pastor and staff to develop a program that will be attractive to the congregation and the public. Utilize computers and other technical and media technologies and platforms to perform the job as required. Be responsible for providing music for all Funerals held at the church. Be responsible for performing or providing music for at least 3 off site engagements with the Pastor per year. Develop and sustain a positive morale within the music ministry, specifically the choir and the musicians. Ensure attitude and statements reflect positively on all staff and pastoral decisions. Be in regular attendance and participate in weekly staff meetings. Performs other duties as assigned and required. Experience & Requirements Bachelor’s degree in music or music related experience to achieve and manage required responsibilities; Master’s degree preferred. Three years of related church experience required. A deep understanding of worship practices within a church setting. Proficiency with and playing musical instruments (piano or organ preferred) to be used in worship services, and knowledge of various musical styles. Extensive knowledge of music and key instruments. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively convey ideas and instructions to choir members, contractors and volunteers. Proven leadership skills with the ability to inspire others through music. An ability to customize services (i.e., funeral, etc.) based on specific needs and requests. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Flexibility to adapt to various changes, policies and guidelines decided by the Pastor and staff. Experience in mentoring musicians or choir members is highly desirable. Ability to work collaboratively with church staff, volunteers, and congregation members. Flexibility to adapt to changing needs within the ministry as they arise.
