General Purpose:
The Director of Youth and Family Ministry will plan, implement, coordinate and execute quality activities to build a vibrant and energetic ministry where children, youth and families can learn, love and live in God’s world and increase the opportunity to grow in faith. The DYFM will enhance discipleship cross-generational activities between the congregation, youth and their families, both within and outside the Church.
Essential Functions:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Evaluate, develop and implement quality programs for youth and families.
- Encourage congregational participation in youth and family events.
- Develop and implement effective Bible study activities for children, youth and families.
- Develop and maintain a consistent calendar of events and reports for bulletins and newsletters.
- Build a comprehensive, consistent program for children and youth that includes, but is not limited to outreach and service events.
- Promote active youth participation and leadership in worship services and congregational life.
- Support parents/caregivers of children in their faith formation at home.
- Assist Pastor as needed for planning educational ministry events such as Confirmation retreats.
- Assist Pastor when new families with children seek membership.
- Partner with other NALC congregations in organizing and leading youth and family activities within NALC-sponsored events.
- Work as part of the staff and volunteer teams to support the overall ministry of the congregation.
- Create, develop and implement Family Sunday School or Bible study that does not conflict with current offerings.
- In coordination with social media and website administrator, contribute in a professional manner the content for social media accounts and the website in various forms, including event postings and promotions, photos, event recaps, etc.
- Communicate and support the efforts of HTLC within the local community.
- Perform administrative tasks as needed.
- Attend and report to staff meetings, Christian Education meetings and Church Council meetings.
- Organize an advisory group within Christian Education or congregation to help with long range planning, chaperones, project helpers, etc.
- Regularly participate in continuing education events provided by NALC.
- Oversee maintenance of youth facilities and equipment.
- Actively participate in yearly budget planning for affected areas of responsibility.
- Maintain confidentiality with discussions and information from children, youth and families, especially communicating with Pastor whenever appropriate.
Expectations:
This is a full time, exempt position. Applicant must be willing to work flexible hours (32-40 per week), weekends and some holidays, to facilitate planned events. Applicant must be capable of engaging in physical activity alongside children and youth, both inside and outdoors. This position will be expected to travel occasionally. Although this position is exempt from overtime, any hours over 40 should be discussed with Pastor or Christian Education Committee prior to expected week. Successful applicant is expected to abide by a strong, ethical code of conduct.
Requirements:
- Deep and abiding love for God and God’s children.
- A thorough understanding of the core values of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and the NALC, or the ability to obtain within the first 3-6 months of employment.
- In-depth knowledge of the Bible and the proven ability to teach children and youth.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively engage with children, youth, families, committees, and the congregation.
- Bachelor’s degree in education, theology, Christian Education or related field.
- Agree to complete additional coursework in Lutheran Studies provided by the NALC.
- 3-5 years of ministry experience with children, youth and families in a faith-based setting.
- Applicant should provide 3 references: 2 work related, and 1 personal or pastor.
Supervisory Structure:
This position reports to the Pastor for day to day functions and to the Church Council through the Christian Education Committee for all other responsibilities.
