Job Title:

Minister of Youth –

Part-Time Position Overall Purpose:

Serve as a member of the ministry team of Centenary UMC to encourage the transformation of young people into faithful disciples of Jesus Christ through the direction and administration of the youth of Centenary United Methodist Church.

Reports to:
  • Pastor of Programs and Congregational Life
  • Senior Pastor
Staff-Parish Relations Committee Basic Requirements:
  • A clear sense of calling to and experience in Christian youth ministry
  • A demonstrated ability to work cooperatively as a member of a ministry team approximately 20 hours per week
  • A relevant undergraduate degree from an accredited institution (required) or a combination of work/experience would be considered based on previous work/experience history.
  • Experience in youth ministry and outreach ministry
  • The ability to administer multiple programs and initiatives including (but not limited to): ◦ Volunteer recruitment, training, and retention ◦ Careful budget creation and management ◦ Developing and sustaining policies geared toward protecting the safety and privacy of ministry participants in your care
  • An ability to communicate with the youth using social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, etc.

and musical ability would be a plus but not a requirement.

Demonstrates commitment and flexibility in scheduling regular coaching sessions with those in his/her span of care. Understands his/her leadership style and temperament type and adapts leadership behaviors to meet the needs of the situation. Delegates, empowers and holds leaders accountable. Marshals resources (people, funding, material, support) to get things done.

Team Building Skills:

Guides leaders in the process of sharing best practice, identifying and solving common problems. Works with leaders to regularly assess the health of teams and groups. Recognizes dysfunctional team behavior and redirects it into functional behavior. Creates and communicates vision, direction and goals for the team.

Leadership Development:

Is a good judge of talent and spiritual giftedness. Can accurately project how people are likely to perform in a variety of settings. Stretches people to try new skills and accept new levels of responsibility.

Organizational Skills:

Organizes not only task of ministry in a professional timely manner, but also neatly and professionally organizes their office, youth room, and all of the spaces for which they are responsible for. Takes personal ownership of all of the church buildings and endeavors to keep them neat and professional.

Detailed description of ministry responsibilities:

The director of youth will be responsible for the oversight and care of these primary areas of ministry:

  • Developing, implementing, and sustaining a comprehensive program of regular an recurring activity based fellowship, small group life, and service/mission work in a Christian environment for youth in middle and high school,
  • Passionately advocating for youth empowerment and involvement in worship, friendship, learning, mission, and evangelism.
  • Spiritually leading youth and mission teams.
  • Providing spiritual care to middle and high school youth, their families, and their adult counselors.
  • Creating a nurturing, stable, and judgment-free environment in which people of all ages may grow as Christians. In addition to these overarching goals, the minister of youth will oversee the following aspects of ministry with youth and adults: Youth Ministries (primary):
  • Cooperate with other ministerial staff members to build a stronger relationship between the youth and their families through: visits, cards, calls, letters and other forms of communication.
  • Youth Minister should be involved in the life of the youth such as attending community events, sporting events, etc. and demonstrate compassion so the youth understand their importance in the functions / activities of the church/community.
  • Engage with the different circles of ministry of the church to encourage more youth involvement in the overall ministry of the whole church
  • Provide guidance in selecting Sunday school curriculum an assist with individual lesson planning as needed
  • Communicate the goals and needs of the youth ministry with all adult teachers and leaders.
  • Select and evaluate the effectiveness of literature and program guides for Sunday school, weekly Bible study and other events.
  • Promote and attend United Methodist and ecumenical youth events, seminars and conferences.
  • Supervise all special youth events whether at the church or away from the church.
  • Identify and recruit adult volunteers to assist in weekly and special events
  • Such events might include (but would not be limited to): retreats, special events for spiritual formation “fun” trips, fundraisers, and all summer youth programs.
  • If the youth minister is unable to attend special events, he or she will make arrangement for competent and trusted adult supervision.
  • Organize and instruct youth in confirmation in conjunction with the pastor.
  • Communicate clearly with the congregation:
  • To encourage youth and parent involvement in youth ministry activities.
  • To promote special events.
  • To facilitate congregational knowledge of the goals and needs of the youth ministry for the purpose of gaining necessary prayer and support.
  • Send appropriate reminders to youth and parents.
Other Duties:
  • Work alongside other pastoral staff in providing pastoral care to congregation through visitation in homes, hospitals, and care facilities.
  • Assist with weekly worship and special service leadership as needed.
