Under the general supervision of the Director of Ministry with Children & Their Families, the Assistant Director for Children’s Faith Formation is responsible for growing young disciples of Jesus Christ, ages 3-12, through ministries of faith formation for the children and for their parents. Experiences will draw children into a closer relationship with Christ and others teaching them the way of Jesus and by creating relationships and resources to connect with parents that strengthens their connection to their children as the primary spiritual nurturers. This includes the elements of learning, knowing and putting faith into action, thereby fulfilling the mission of the church: to know Christ, to make Him known, and exhibit His love through worship, education, and service. This salaried, full-time role will work Monday through Thursday during regular Church office hours on-site and will have evening and weekend work (including Sundays) as required on a regular basis. The compensation range is $2,100 to $2,300 per bi-weekly pay period based on experience. Position Duties & Responsibilities :
Ministry Leadership Serve the Children’s Ministry in an administrative capacity responsible for the day-to-day operations and management of assigned staff. Support and assist all Children’s Ministry staff in the implementation and execution of Sunday morning programming and curriculum integration. Assist the Children’s Ministry team in recruiting, training, and supporting Christian Education and Hospitality volunteers [Welcome Desk, Young Children & Worship, Pre-Kg Sunday School (ages 4 – 6) and Elementary Sunday School (1st – 6th grades)] enabling them to effectively share God’s Word as revealed in Jesus Christ. Minister to Children’s Ministry volunteers on a regular basis, recognizing significant events happening in their lives (death in family, illness, birth/adoption of a child, etc.) and assists with recognition and response for those significant events (meals, cards, or other appropriate caring responses). Provide consistent and thorough feedback, data, and input to Director of Ministry with Children & Their Families on how to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of all programming and Children’s Ministry as a whole. Support the mission and vision of First Presbyterian Church of Nashville by participating in the life of the church and “all-church” events. Serve as an ambassador to share the vision of the Children’s Ministry with the wider church community. Major Event Leadership Serve as primary leader for Children’s Ministry Major Events and as the Children’s Ministry liaison for All-Church Major Events (VBS, Confirmation Kick-Off, Advent and Lenten activities, Movie Night, Christmas Ceilidh, PJ Drive, Epiphany, etc.) Consistently learn, maintain and execute the Major Events essential systems (MP, eSpace, All—Church Events Calendar) of Children’s Ministry and ensure that measures are taken to keep them operational and thriving with a specific focus on the member database, facilities and calendar systems. Provide exceptional support to Children’s Ministry staff and volunteers during all Major Events. Family Faith Formation Curate resources that promote and empower at-home faith formation. Regularly meet, encourage and support young parents as the primary spiritual nurturers of their families. Create a culture of “surrogate” families that support young parents in the faith formation of their children and support them in creating a web of connections around kids at the church. Elementary Faith Formation and Programming Provide year-round weekly learning opportunities for children (based on Deuteronomy 6: 5- 7). Partner with the Director to present the gospel to both believers and unbelievers in an age-appropriate manner through the implementation of curriculum, games, music, and small groups. Oversee 1st-6th grade programming by providing leadership, logistical support, and encouragement to volunteers and Children’s Ministry staff. Cultivate an environment for 1st-6th grade that creates a community with an emphasis on friendship, vulnerability, celebration, and worship. Serve as the primary contact for families with children in grades 1 – 6. Teach weekly in an Elementary Sunday School large group space. Lead regular preteen and Elementary parties to encourage connection and service. Lead the 6th grade Confirmation team providing direction regarding curriculum, class events, the parent team, retreat, examination and presentation for membership. Work with the Youth Ministry to create a seamless transition from Children’s Ministry to Youth Ministry. Partner with Director on all aspects of Elementary Milestone celebrations. May serve as a worship leader for Sunday morning programming time sharing God’s Word with children and teachers. Operational Meet regularly with the Director to continue to grow in professional development and to implement both short-term and long-term goals that accomplish the vision of the Children’s Ministry. Partner with the Director on changing demographics and methodologies needed to reach children within the ministry. Review and evaluate participation. Develop action plans when changes are necessary. Manage the process for ensuring first-time guests, 3rd time visits and MIA children receive exceptional and hospitable follow up. Serve as Staff Resource to the Committee for Ministry with Children and Their Families and attend scheduled meetings. Attend weekly all-staff chapel and meetings plus ministry meetings. Promote the Children’s Ministry to families and the congregation at-large by writing content for the church newsletters, E-Letters, website, etc. Knowledge/Skills Motivated and self-directed; a proven strategic problem-solver and relationship manager with a results orientation. Ability to work independently, organize, prioritize and manage multiple projects and diverse teams of people to meet deadlines. Clear and effective communication skills with the ability to promote teamwork. Demonstrate a warm, caring, compassionate and understanding attitude towards both children and adults. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Aptitude for learning new technologies like Ministry Platform (to be learned on the job). Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. Creation and management of electronic filing systems.
Position Qualifications Education:
Bachelor’s Degree Experience:
An active, growing relationship with Jesus Christ and pursuit of an intimate relationship with God that includes daily times of devotion, prayer and growth in Christian maturity. Knowledge of the bible, the Reformed tradition, and an ability to integrate the Christian faith into day-to-day work in a way that brings about the advancement of the gospel, required. Minimum of five years working experience in a children’s faith formation ministry of a church. Presbyterian, with a working knowledge of the polity and program of the Presbyterian Church (USA), preferred. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Certified (CCE) or Certified Associate (CACE) Christian Educator in the Presbyterian Church (USA), a plus. Participation in annual Continuing Education events is required. Valid driver’s license and acceptable MVR, required.
