Job Description

Area Coordinator – Upper Class Communities
Hendrix College is seeking a full-time, 12-month support staff position. Reporting to the Director of Residential Life, the Area Coordinator – Upper Class Communities will provide guidance and vision for upper class residential communities, including living-learning communities, apartment housing, and suite-style living. The Area Coordinator will supervise staff of undergraduate Head Resident Assistants/ Resident Assistants and will have an oversight of departmental staff initiatives, such as student staff recruitment, hiring, and training. This position reports to the Director of Residential Life and serves as an active member of the Student Affairs staff.

Essential Job Functions:

Supervision
Provide direct supervision, training, and evaluation for Head RAs and RAs within upper class communities to implement the Upper Class Residential Experience (UCRE).
Coordinate bi-weekly area meetings to review intentional programmatic efforts, student concerns, and facility needs.
Conduct one-on-one meetings with student staff to provide direct support and para-professional development.
Address student staff with behavioral or disciplinary concerns in alignment with departmental policies and procedures. Ensure the director is engaged with significant staffing concerns.
Implement and engage departmental and community-wide programming efforts.
Assist with the supervision of residential hall councils.
Administration
Attend residential life staff training and other professional development opportunities offered by the department and college.
Attend professional staff meetings and Head RA meetings.
Coordinate opening and closings of residence halls each semester and designated break periods.
Properly maintain official documentation and student records, including but not limited to, residence hall rosters, Room Condition Reports, health and safety inspections, and student conduct information.
Serve on campus or community committees as requested or approved by the director.
Student Conduct
Clearly communicate, interpret, support, and enforce departmental and college policies to staff and students.
Ensure student staff members are appropriately confronting and documenting behavioral issues and concerns.
Perform residential conduct meetings as directed by policies and procedures.
Review all assigned incident reports and duty logs daily.
Community Development
Develop professional relationships with Head RAs and RAs to support their success as students and paraprofessionals.
Advises and refers staff and students for various issues, including academic support, personal development, roommate conflict, conduct, mental health, etc.
Oversee and guide RAs in the implementation of residential programming to foster student learning, development, and success at the college.
Promote an environment that supports the mission and goals of the department, division, and College.
Interpret and enforce residential life and procedures informally and formally.
Maintain high visibility on-campus.
Serve as a resource and referral for students, parents, faculty, and staff.
Promote student involvement in residential, curricular, and co-curricular activities.
Support and participate in college initiatives and traditions, including but not limited to, New Student Orientation, Family Weekend, Alumni Weekend, and Commencement.
Collaborate with Student Activities to serve and support the student event management team.
Serve in mentorship role and an additional level of support to students, RAs, and Head RAs.
Facilities Management
Complete health and safety inspections with Head RAs and RAs.
Participate in weekly walk-throughs of residential communities to ensure a clean, safe living environment for students.
Attend Hendrix Housing meetings with residential life and facilities staff leadership.
Suggest, implement, and support new and innovative initiatives to further support a thriving residential experience.
Crisis Management
Provide leadership during crises in the residential and campus community.
Evacuate residence halls in the event of an emergency.
Participate in a year-round on-call rotation to respond to student concerns, policy violations, and emergencies. This includes periods when the college is closed.
Assist other campus departments such as Public Safety, Counseling, Facilities, in case of emergency.

Qualifications and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree with an emphasis in Higher Education (or approved equivalent) preferred
Strong understanding of the development of traditional students and will actively support the liberal arts mission.
Knowledge of university housing processes and administration is required; 1 to 2 years of professional housing/residential life work experience preferred.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Possess strong organizational skills, be creative and enthusiastic team member, and take initiative and leadership within an organization.
Appreciation and understanding of diverse individuals and groups is essential.
A successful candidate will be required to live on campus in a furnished 2-bedroom apartment. Apartment and utilities are provided by the College.
