This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits, competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. This posting is for an Engineer I that will serve as the Assistant Resident Engineer in the Winston-Salem Construction 2 Resident Engineer’s Office in Division 9. The Assistant Resident Engineer assists the Resident Engineer in the day-to-day contract administration of major and minor transportation projects. It also supervises DOT and CEI employees and prepares and evaluates their performance, promotes a safe working environment, and possesses a working knowledge of DOT policies and procedures. Duties include keeping records necessary for the preparation of monthly estimates and final estimates; working closely with contractors, utility companies and other governmental agencies; and having contact with the public and news media. In addition, the position will need to review and evaluate data collected by field personnel and prepare technical letters and reports. This position will review contract plans, specifications, and material testing results. The employee may be exposed to high traffic volumes, work at heights over water or traffic and climb on the substructure and superstructure of bridges. This position may be required to work outside in various types of weather and terrain. This position may be required to work at night, on weekends, holidays, and extended hours as required to resolve project issues. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: Demonstrated ability in planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision. Experience in directing, assisting or training subordinate employees. Experience making recommendations for simple or complex projects. Knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering. Experience reviewing project plans and specifications for compliance with established practices and principles of engineering.

Additional Expectations:

The ability to work safely in both office and outside environments with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction is required. Must be able to perform moderate physical activity, including but not limited to walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, standing, and lifting. Must apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety-toed shoes are required. Necessary Special Qualification:

May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
