FULL-TIME, 37.5 HOURS GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Project BUILD Outreach Worker will work with youth and young adults, ages 10-21, and their families. The position will carry a regular caseload of 15-25 gang-involved program participants on an ongoing basis. This position will respond to referrals, conduct intake assessments, and work as a part of a multidisciplinary team to develop an intervention plan and implement this plan with clients. This position requires frequent interaction and relationship building with youth, families, and community partners, including schools, court and criminal justice personnel, and grassroots agencies. The Project BUILD Outreach Worker will have a high level of familiarity with Durham neighborhoods, agencies, and schools; knowledge of local gang issues; and prior experience working with youth. Durham County residents preferred.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary. Work with youth and young adults, ages 10-21, and their families; Carry a regular caseload of 15-25 gang-involved program participants on an ongoing basis; Provides intense case management which includes home visits and transporting participants; Responsible for linking these individuals to services and support; Work closely with gang involved youth to assist them with achieving educational success, addressing social skills deficits, coordinated service delivery, advocacy and gaining employment; Assist youth with enrolling in school, maintaining appropriate school behavior and attendance, and connecting them with other needed services; Contact and meet with partner agencies to support and advocate program participants; Document client outcomes, service delivery, and contacts weekly; Participate in group sessions and other activities involving Project Build participants, such as weekly group sessions; Performs related work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Experience working with youth and young adults; Knowledge of local gang issues and needs of gang involved and high-risk youth; Ability to work effectively with high risk and gang involved youth/young adults and their families; Familiarity with Durham neighborhoods, agencies and schools; Ability to maintain effective working relationships with school, criminal justice, and other program personnel; Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; Ability to make sound decisions and demonstrate good judgement in areas of responsibility; Basic computer literacy skills; Ability to perform accurate and timely documentation of client service delivery.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and six months of work experience related to the assigned program.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
