05/31/2025 Apply via email The Youth Programs Coordinator plays a lead role in delivery of our two summer youth programs in the
Katahdin Region:
the Maine Youth Wilderness Program (MYWLP) and the Baxter Youth Conservation Corps (BYCC). Responsibilities are focused primarily on program delivery, as well as communications and outreach work in support of our mission. The ideal candidate will be based in one of the communities of the Katahdin Region. Extensive travel throughout Baxter State Park and the Katahdin region will be required. This is a salaried, full-time, year-round position focused on youth, wilderness, and outdoor recreation. The Youth Programs Coordinator is part of a small team and reports directly to the Executive Director of Friends of Baxter State Park.
Key responsibilities include the following:
Maine Youth Wilderness Leadership Program (15%)
- Coordinate all promotion and outreach for the MYWLP
- Oversee the application process between December – February each year
- Organize all applications for review by the MYWLP selection committee
- Serve on the selection committee, including participating in the annual selection meeting
- Arrange all guest instructors for the program, including recruiting, scheduling, logistics, and follow-up after the trips.
- Provide focused support for program expansion in 2025
- Participate in pre-trip planning sessions with FBSP and Chewonki staff
- Represent FBSP at program kickoffs and wrap-ups at Baxter State Park headquarters
- Serve as a logistical and emergency point of contact
- Coordinate the submission of participant photos and videos
- Assist with program evaluations and debrief Baxter Youth Conservation Corps (50%)
- Visit schools in the Katahdin region to promote the BYCC and recruit participants
- Represent FBSP at local career fairs and other outreach events
- Assist with application review and hiring participants for the program
- Assist with safety training and group orientations throughout the summer
- Work as a substitute trail crew leader when needed
- Provide transportation to youth participants in a FBSP van
- Spend time in the field with the BYCC trail crew
- Take photos and videos of the crew at work
- Provide support in the event of any youth injuries that require medical attention, including transport to the hospital and communicating with parents.
- Help plan and coordinate career workshops and other enrichment opportunities
- Serve as an initial point of contact on any crew member disciplinary issues
- Maintain lines of communication with Baxter State Park staff, trail crew leaders, guest instructors, and other partners to support program operations
- Provide logistical support with tools, equipment, van maintenance & refueling, communication, and general troubleshooting as needed
- Keep records of program accomplishments and statistics (e.g. miles of trail corridor cleared, feet of bog bridging constructed, number of step stones installed, hours worked) in close consultation with crew leaders
- Assist with gathering trail crew timesheets and submitting for payroll
- Generate program-related content for FBSP website and publications
- Ensure that all participants complete a program evaluation
- Participate in an end-of-season debrief meeting and program evaluation process Community Outreach (10%)
- Represent FBSP at various community events in the Katahdin Region
- Build and maintain relationships with partner organizations and other nonprofits working in the conservation and outdoor recreation space
- Build and maintain relationships with local businesses
- Raise the profile of FBSP in the Katahdin Region Communications Support (25%)
- Assist with updates and maintenance of the FBSP website .
- Assist with FBSP’s monthly email newsletter and other email communications
- Develop content for website, social media, and email communications
- Participate in weekly staff meetings and other meetings as required
- Other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director Desired Qualifications and Experience
- Experience working with high school students, preferably in the outdoors
- Exceptional communication and organizational skills
- An interest in learning about the ecology of the Park
- A love for the outdoors, preferably with experience backpacking, hiking, and camping in the Maine woods. Experience in trail maintenance is a plus.
- Ability to articulate and share Friends of Baxter State Park’s mission and vision
- Highest standards of personal and professional integrity
- Current wilderness first aid / CPR certification
- Flexible, friendly, positive, outgoing, organized, and self-motivated
- Computer, internet access, cell phone, and a reliable vehicle
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, including remote work
- Willingness to travel within Baxter State Park and throughout the Katahdin region (mostly day/evening, with some weekends)
- A sense of humor and an ability to solve problems
Compensation:
This is a full-time, year-round position with a competitive salary and benefits. Starting salary $45,000.
