About the Position
Certified Peer Support Specialist needed for South Mississippi State Hospital’s Peer Bridger Program. Applicant must self-identify as a consumer or former consumer of mental health services and must be doing well in long-term recovery. The Peer Support Specialist/Peer Bridger will be an instrumental part of the Peer Bridger Program at SMSH. In this role, the certified peer support specialist establishes supportive relationships with hospitalized consumers and assists them with the transition from inpatient to community-based care. This is done by holding meetings, prior to discharge from the hospital, to thoroughly introduce the consumer to peer support specialists and other staff who are at the outpatient programs to which the consumer is being referred. The peer bridger utilizes Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP) and personal outcome measures to help with with transition to community-based services with a goal of decreasing future need for inpatient treatment.
Responsibilities:
- Participates in peer bridger meetings as a liaison between consumers in the hospital and peer support specialists at the community mental health centers to which they are being referred. This includes organizing and conducting meetings (currently by videoconference) with multiple participants.
- Actively engages with adults on the inpatient unit, conducts recovery-oriented educational group sessions, and participates in recreation therapies on the hospital unit.
- Serve as a role model to peers by demonstrating active and effective use of recovery skills and mental health services.
- Assist hospitalized consumers with initiating Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP) and discussing WRAP in peer bridger meetings.
- Provides written documentation of services.

Preferred Qualifications
Typically requires a High School Diploma or high school equivalency and 2+ years of relevant experience/education and/or relevant certifications/licenses.
Agency preferred qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Current Mississippi Department of Mental Health Certified Peer Support Specialist
- Must have demonstrated a minimum of twelve (12) months in self-directed recovery
- Must have very good verbal and written communication skills
- Must be able to lead educational group sessions to promote use of recovery skills.
- Preference given to those certified in Wellness Recovery Action Planning (WRAP), but training can be provided if not already certified
- Basic computer skills.
- Valid Driver License
