This is a volunteer role and can be used for volunteer hours. This Kid’s College Junior Counselor, typically between the ages of 13-17, would be interested in shadowing our Senior Counselors in order to learn what it is like to be a camp counselor. In conjunction with a Senior counselor, you would be monitoring transitions to all instructional activities, supervising campers at lunch, and assisting as needed throughout the day. As a Junior Counselor, you will need to upload the following:
A letter stating why you want to be a volunteer Junior Counselor
A letter of recommendation from a teacher or administrator at your school.
A copy of a recent grade report that shows you maintain good grades (C or above).
Your answer to the following two questions, one of the scenario questions, and please list any and all commitments you have for the full month of June AND the mandatory training dates that would impede your ability to be onsite for the full duration of the camp day (7a to 6p).
Question #1
Describe how you would establish yourself as an authority figure with our campers when you will most likely be only 1-3 years older than some of them while respecting the senior counselor’s and the instructor’s authority.
Question #2
What do you feel is the most important thing a junior counselor should do during a typical day in camp? Why do you think this is THE most important thing? How will you ensure that you do this daily?
Pick ONE of the following scenarios. Tell us what is wrong with the scenario and what the three steps would you take to address the situation.
Scenario #1—Your Senior Counselor has asked you to take a camper to the bathroom. When you get into the hall with the camper she asks you to take her by the snack machine on the way so that she can buy a snack. Scenario #2—An older camper approaches you to let you know that they have been crushing on you for a while. They request your Snapchat in the hopes of starting a streak with you.
Scenario #3—You witness an older camper in your house spending an unusual amount of time with one of the youngest campers in your house. The older camper consistently has the younger camper in their lap, carries them piggy-back around the room, and is always by their side. Our camp will run the month of June 2024 beginning June 2nd through June 27th. We will have mandatory training onsite at Wesleyan from 9:00-4:00pm, Tuesday, May 27th – Friday, May 30th. •Returning counselors need only attend Wednesday, May 28th – Friday, May 30th but must apply for the position through this avenue.
