The Side by Side Rehabilitation Counselor provides education, crisis management, and counseling services to acquired brain injury (ABI) families whose loved ones have experienced an acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury, or other neurological events and provides consultation to professional staff on ABI regarding family coping and adjustment issues. This role works to improve patient and family experience by offering support programs, supporting members life skills goals, supporting members employment goals and helping members navigate GVRA systems. The Rehabilitation Counselor will help support the day-to-day operation of the Kitchen Unit at least three days away for the first year of employment.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Side by Side Rehabilitation Counselor responsibilities: Develop and run family support program Support members in employment goals Support members in life skills goals Lead the development and revitalization of afternoon groups Lead the program team volunteer program Possibly supervise additional interns Support intake functions Support further development of group volunteer activities Systematically ensure member goals are being developed, reported on effectively to stakeholders

Kitchen Unit Responsibilities:

Develop grocery store system and trips Groups for menu planning Help KU members pass Serve Safe Develop goals and write member plans and monthly reports for KU members Develop Snack bar system and trips Develop more tasks within KU that promote increased member ownership and engagement

REQUIRED MINIMUM EDUCATION

Master’s Degree in social work, counseling, or related field with training in family systems theory and crisis management/grief counseling. Become Certified Brain Injury Specialist within a year of employment.

REQUIRED MINIMUM EXPERIENCE

Directed experience under supervision in a setting acceptable to the Composite Board. Experience may have been in an approved practicum placement as part of the degree program. Prefer experience in (1) working with families who have experienced catastrophic injuries; (2) participating on interdisciplinary teams; (3) providing individual and group therapy services; and (4) providing crisis/grief counseling.

REQUIRED MINIMUM SKILLS

Demonstrate strong clinical skills Knowledgeable in family systems theory Address family crisis situations directly and effectively. Provide grief counseling Knowledge of ABI and disease, and related cognitive, behavioral, and emotional issues Understand and have knowledge of the rehabilitation process for ABI and disease Ability to educate family and team members on critical issues related to adjustment/coping following a catastrophic injury Must demonstrate ability to organize group counseling/education and therapy sessions and provide individualized treatment interventions to meet the adjustment needs of family members Must exhibit strong teaching and communication skills regarding patient, family, staff, and community education

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Basic office physical demands. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time or exerting up to 15 pounds of force occasionally or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
