Youth Care Professional Hinds County, Mississippi Hinds County, MS This is the entry level position within the Detention Officer series. This work is overseeing the activities of youth in a Juvenile Detention Center environment or a secure facility in programs designed to support the rehabilitation of youth. It also includes maintaining security and order among youth being supervised and taking action to restore order when incidents occur. Incumbents in this position may provide supervision and care of male and/or female youth on a 24-hour basis. Incumbents will be trained in physical restraint techniques and are expected to restrain youths who engage in behavior that creates a danger to themselves and/or others. Work is performed under the direction and supervision of a detention administrative superior. Examples of Basic Tasks and Duties Examples of work performed in this classification include, but are not limited to the following: Become aware of specific policies and procedures including training on supervision and treatment of youth, child and adolescent development, behavior management, crisis intervention, conflict management, juvenile rights, suicide prevention and mental health, behavioral observation, gang intervention and de-escalation. Maintain accountability of Youth who you identified to work with within specified housing unit. Work designated shifts, 7-3, 3-11, 11-7 to include weekend and Holidays. Assist in the implementation of all program plans. Complete regular room searches/strip searches in accordance with policies individuals in order to combat excessive contraband when necessary. Participate in orientation process of youth who have been admitted into the Juvenile Detention Facility. Draft reports for review concerning the activities associated with youth who are maintained at the facility. Participate with youth in facilitating structured educational, rehabilitative and /or recreational programs for youth. Work with youth by utilizing the designated Behavior Modification Plan. Supervise youth activities which are intended to alleviate idleness. Supervise small leisure activities such as reading, creative writing, card and table games crafts leisure reading. Work with youth who are prone to have behavioral issues. Monitor youth while in school room setting to ensure they are actively participating in the designated educational classroom activity with appropriate behavior. Restrain youth when necessary, perform first aid as needed. Perform daily sanitation inspections of assigned areas to ensure compliance with housing rules. Work with youth on developing appropriate life skills. Develop a working knowledge of all policies and procedures utilized in order to perform designated duties. Maintain safety of all youth maintained in the Juvenile Detention Center. In-process youth into the facility who have been deemed appropriate for admission to the Juvenile Detention Center. Ensure that all appropriate documentation has been received for youth designated for release. Performs other duties as assigned, Qualifications An associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with previous corrections, juvenile or related experience preferred Or A high school diploma with previous corrections, juvenile or related experience required. One (1) year of experience working with delinquent youth in a training school or other secure facility. And Possession of a valid Mississippi driver’s license.
