YMCA After School Counselor YMCA of Mitchell County Spruce Pine, NC 28777

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the direction and supervision of the Director of Youth Development and Afterschool Site Lead, and in harmony with the established policies, goals and objectives of the YMCA of Mitchell County, the Afterschool Counselor works as supportive staff to provide effective programs and a warm, safe, loving and nurturing environment in which the child can grow physically, emotionally and intellectually.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Establish positive relationships with parents, children, school personnel and other staff members. Be a positive role model. 2. Assist the Site Lead and Afterschool Teachers in implementing quality program curriculum and lesson plans of the daily program, including arts and crafts, active games, and snack. 3. Assist with supervision of children. Maintain that children are never left alone. Make sure all children are watched at all times. 4. Assist with positive reinforcement and disciplinary needs of children. 5. Help to maintain a physically and mentally safe environment for the children. 6. Actively support and participate in YMCA functions as notified by the Director of Youth Development. 7. Attend all required staff meetings and give input on programming issues. 8. Assist with record-keeping including daily attendance, supply requests, and newsletter information 9. Follow and enforce Association and departmental policies, including the substitute policy. 10. Substitute at other 21C Afterschool program sites as required. 11. Actively pursue training and learning opportunities and certifications relating to the position. Maintain current certifications required by the position. 12. Is committed to maintaining a workplace free from all forms of harassment 13. Adheres to policies related to boundaries with youth. 14. Attends required abuse risk management training. 15. Adheres to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising youth. 16. Reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations. 17. Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements. 18 . Performs other duties as assigned

          QUALIFICATIONS
          • At least 17 years of age.
          • CPR, First Aid and AED Certification and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
          • Must meet all Association-Wide training requirements in addition to those set forth by their Supervisor.
          • Must be able to pass a Nationwide Criminal and Sex Offender Registry Background Screening.
          • Previous experience working with children is preferred.
          • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
          • Emotional maturity, and the ability to meet challenges with possible solutions.
          • Ability to communicate processes in a way that can be understood by children of various ages and grade levels.

          • Hear noises and distress signals in indoor and outdoor environments, and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
          • Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
          • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
