out of 5 stars 714 14th Street, Port Royal, SC Residential Youth Specialist I provides a safe and structured environment for foster youth in a residential living facility and promotes the learning of skills for emotional, mental, and physical health. This position reports directly to the Residential Services Coordinator and requires ongoing participation in a pre-set amount of continuing education that is focused on child abuse and child-related material. The Residential Youth Specialist I will also be responsible for all other duties designated by his/her supervisors that will benefit the organization. This is a full-time position with benefits. There are openings on 2nd shift (4 pm to midnight) and 3rd shift (midnight to 8 am) . Third shift will receive a $1 shift differential for hours worked between midnight and 8 am. Resident Support Develops and maintains healthy relationships with residents using a strengths-based, trauma-informed approach. Engages each resident with positive, unconditional acceptance and regard. Provides pro-active supervision and monitoring of youth in accordance with the policies of the Child Abuse Prevention Association and South Carolina Department of Social Services. Teaches, models, and participates in instruction in daily living, recreational activities, social skills, emotional regulation skills, and independent living skills as prescribed by each youth’s Comprehensive Care Plan. Transports clients (youth) to school appointments, doctor appointments, work, extracurricular activities, recreation, or other case related appointments. Completes all intake paperwork on new residents. Completes incident reports as necessary. Assists case management personnel in planning activities for the children. Provides fair and constructive discipline to residents per Open Arms Children Home’s policy. Observes and documents changes in each youth’s behavior. Reports any significant incidents, both positive and negative. Maintains the order, security, and safety of the Open Arms Children’s Home at all times. Manages crisis situations, using the on-call system as needed. Utilizes consistent behavior management techniques to respond to resident’s behavior. Enhances the self-esteem of each resident through monitoring grooming and dress. Administers medications according to agency policy. Upholds professional conduct boundaries with youth, families and other stakeholders at all times. Household Support Assists in maintaining the shelter in a clean and safe condition. Informs the House Manager of any safety hazards, cleanliness or maintenance issues, or needed vehicle maintenance. Maintains a list of supplies or special needs that the children or residential staff need. Prepares meals and snacks for the children in accordance with dietary guidelines. Provides activities and learning opportunities for the children. Miscellaneous Completes all documentation required for the position in a timely and accurate manner. Abides by client and program confidentiality to the highest standard. Reports immediately to the Department of Social Services or Law Enforcement any suspicion of abuse or neglect as required by law. Participates in and represents CAPA at community events and provides support at CAPA events, as assigned. Maintains a spirit of teamwork with other residential home staff; this includes attending weekly team meetings and staffings, as required. Attends meetings, training, seminars, and conferences as assigned by supervisory staff. Continually trains in the implementation of Together Facing the Challenge (TFTC) and Trust-based Relational Intervention (TBRI). Complies with continuing education requirements. Demonstrates the highest investment in and commitment to quality improvement practices in order to continuously improve the delivery of services to our clients. Performs any other related duties as may be necessary to the functioning of the agency or at the request of the supervisor. Qualifications Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including active listening. Proficient computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment and adaptive skills to expand software application skills as necessary. Patience, positive attitude, and willingness to develop greater skills and understanding of youth with behavior disorders and/or mental health issues. Willingness to engage with youth in social and recreational activities, as well as act in a surrogate parent role including assisting with homework, chores, attending appointments, school activities and events and any DSS-related expectations. Must be able to work in occasionally high pressure, high stress and physical environment. Possess independent problem-solving skills and be willing to seek assistance and guidance when needed. Ability to exercise discretion and ensure confidentiality. Ability to accept direction and modify interactions with youth at direction of supervisory and clinical team. High school diploma or equivalent (GED). The equivalent of 2 years of full-time experience working with children. Must be able to successfully complete all phases or pre-service training and on-going training as required by DSS and CAPA policy. Must have the ability to interact in a professional manner with staff, clients, DSS staff, court officials and the general public. Must be 21 years or older. Prior to employment must have a physical, TB test, and drug screening. CPR and First Aid certified within 30 days of hire and again bi-annually. Ability to work flexible hours. Access to reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, approved insurance coverage (to include being approved by CAPA’s automobile insurance carrier) and clean driving record. Ability to climb stairs, bend, crouch, and lift 50lbs and may require long periods of sitting and standing. Must have no criminal record that falls within the purview of the DSS Office of Inspector General. Must have no history of substantiated child abuse or neglect. Bilingual capabilities preferred.
