- Job Description Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church, located in Garden City, is an active and growing congregation.
Founded in 1975, the church’s population is growing to include many families with young children. We are a reconciling in Christ congregation, and recognize and include ALL individuals in our worship and fellowship activities. We are currently seeking an individual to direct our youth and youth-related programs and activities in a meaningful and faith-based manner. Through leadership, this Youth Director will be primarily responsible for the thoughtful planning and preparation of youth and children in: discipleship activities, evangelism, education, praise and worship activities, and fellowship events in a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment. As the lead staff person in this area, the Youth Director will ensure quality educational and fellowship programs, and will work with the Senior Pastor and a team of volunteers, to explore ways to provide youth programs and activities that develop all-encompassing lives of faith among our youth. As a growing congregation that is community-oriented, this individual needs to be nurturing, responsible, and supportive to enable the youth of our congregation to learn and to grow. The Youth Director will also develop and sustain community and volunteer partnerships to enhance programming. As our church and youth program continue to grow, the Youth Director will support strategic planning and help to determine the future directions of our work with children, youth and their families. This is a part-time position.
Responsibilities :
Develop education and fellowship opportunities/programs/activities for the youth of our congregation by: 1. Overseeing a staff and volunteers for Children’s Church, Vacation Bible School, and any other youth activities, with some Shepherd of the Sea Partners taking leadership roles in these areas when/where appropriate. Recruit, inspire, train, and empower these volunteers to support the vision of our youth ministry, as well as coordinate volunteer scheduling. Provide coaching of all volunteers as needed. 2. Selecting and developing curriculum for Children’s Church (to be approved by Senior Pastor). 3. Planning and implementing youth activities including, but not limited to: summer camps, retreats, mission activities, outreach events, fundraisers, Easter Egg Hunt, Family Camp, Trunk or Treat, Children’s Christmas Pageant, and other church sanctioned youth events. 4. Coordinating with Senior Pastor on Confirmation Training and take a role as deemed appropriate. 5. Coordinating and scheduling all events, the recruitment of volunteers, and space needs with Parish Property Manager. 6. Identifying ways to meet needs of youth of different ages to help them to learn and grow in our congregation. The following age groups have been identified: Birth through pre-school; K through 5th grade; 6th through 8th grade; 9th through 12th grade. 7. Coordinating and developing programs for older youth to help them to grow to full adult members who will willingly participate in church activities. 8. Coordinating with Youth Leadership Team and Lay Evangelist to create opportunities within the church for youth. 9. Identifying and promoting opportunities for youth outside of Shepherd of the Sea (i.e., ELCA, SC Synod, NC Synod, etc.). 10. Reaching out to various Shepherd of the Sea ministries/small groups/leaders to identify skills for youth and youth programs. This includes encouraging children to serve as Sunday Servants, including Lectors, Acolytes, Altar Guild, Greeters, Ushers, A/V Team assistant, etc. 11. Working with Diversity/Inclusiveness Team to determine ways to make all youth feel welcome (i.e., race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+, physical mobility challenges, vision/hearing deficit, autism spectrum, etc.). 12. Preparing written communications/updates regarding youth programs for parents and church family. Work with Digital Ministry Team on electronic communications and social media presence. 13. Working with Treasurer on supplies and budgetary requirements for all youth programs. 14. Ensuring completion of background checks for all youth ministry volunteers. 15. Assisting the Senior Pastor with Children’s Message at 9:30 and 11:00 services. 16. Additional responsibilities may be assigned by Senior Pastor. Requirements 1. A willingness to grow in faith and in this position as Shepherd of the Sea grows as a congregation. 2. Have a growing faith and theology that is in alignment with the mission, vision, and core values of Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church. Be supportive and knowledgeable of Lutheran Theology. 3. Be able to work well with all staff, volunteers, and people of all abilities to grow our youth programs. 4. Be sensitive to the busy schedules for youth, adults, and families. 5. Be organized and thorough. 6. Have excellent communication skills (including verbal, written, and social media). 7. Be flexible, creative and passionate about the role of youth in our church. 8. Have a good sense of humor. 9. Be willing to attend continuing education programs for professional growth.
Experience and Education:
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree (in Education, Early Childhood Education, or any other degree related to human services) or combination of education and experience (at least 5 years work experience with children/youth may be substituted for Bachelor’s degree).
- Satisfactorily complete background check.
- At interview, submission of 3 references.
Preferred:
- Certification in Youth & Family Ministry
- Certification or experience in education
- Experience with youth development programming, such as social-emotional learning, social skills training, service learning, etc.
- Experience with teaching and/or curriculum development.
- Experience with out-of-school programming and managing safety and licensing procedures.
- Supervisory experience with all identified age groups
- Strong attention to detail and good organization skills. Ability to multi-task
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Commitment to Shepherd of the Sea’s mission and organizational beliefs

Child CPR/First Aid Certification Compensation :
Compensation for this position is $1,000 per month. This position carries no benefits. The starting date for this position is September 1, 2025 . This paid position shall not include personal volunteer hours for any ministry or small group within our church, should the Youth Director choose to participate in any way. After 90-days, an initial evaluation will be conducted by Senior Pastor to assess performance and adjust the position description if necessary. The Personnel Committee will provide review of the Youth Director every year in November. The Personnel Committee is available for other meetings, if desired, at the discretion of the employee, the Senior Pastor, or the Personnel Committee. With a 30-day notice either the Employer or the Employee, may terminate the employment contract without cause or reason. At that time, any property, material, or assets belonging to the employer will be returned, and all materials and files will not be shared with any outside agencies, churches, congregations or individuals.
