Job Description
Code Enforcement Officer Reidsville Reidsville, NC 27320 JOB The Code Enforcement Officer performs responsible, professional work interpreting, applying, and enforcing the City’s Code of Ordinances, zoning regulations, nuisance laws, and other related codes to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public. This position works closely with citizens, property owners, and businesses to ensure compliance through inspections, investigations, education, and enforcement actions.
The employee conducts field inspections and responds to citizen complaints, ensuring compliance with various local and state codes. Duties include preparing legal documents, attending administrative hearings, presenting cases to City Council, and appearing in court when necessary. The work requires considerable public contact, conflict resolution skills, and knowledge of zoning, nuisance, housing, and maintenance regulations. This position reports to the Director of Planning & Community Development or their designee.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Enforces the City’s nuisance, minimum housing, non-residential maintenance, zoning, subdivision, watershed, and floodplain ordinances.
Responds to citizen complaints, investigates potential violations, and ensures compliance.
Conducts proactive field inspections across City limits; documents and tracks violations and compliance progress.
Issues notices of violation, prepares legal evidence for enforcement proceedings, and participates in administrative hearings and court actions as required.
Works with property owners to facilitate compliance through education and voluntary remediation.
Maintains accurate records of inspections, warnings, notices, violations, and corrective actions.
Forwards violations to appropriate City departments when needed.
Provides monthly and annual reports on code enforcement activities; occasionally presents findings at meetings and hearings.
Attends neighborhood and community meetings as necessary.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Physical Requirements Ability to work both indoors and outdoors under varying weather conditions.
Must be able to walk over rough terrain, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push, pull, and lift up to 80 pounds.
Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to perform inspections, use measurement devices, and communicate effectively.
Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, and potentially hazardous environments such as dilapidated structures and high vegetation.
Education and ExperienceHigh School Diploma or GED required.
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Public Administration, or a related field preferred.
Three (3) years of experience working with land use, zoning, nuisance, code enforcement, housing inspections, or a related field, strongly preferred.
