Animal Services Caretaker (Part-Time) Oconee County Georgia Oconee County, GA

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The Animal Services caretaker is responsible for the daily care feeding and well-being of animals housed at Oconee County Animal Services. This position ensures a clean, safe, and compassionate environment through routine cleaning, enrichment activities, and close observation of animals for health and behavior. Caretakers are part of a team committed to high standards of animal care and customer service. This position reports to the Medical Officer or Animal Services Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Cleans and disinfects animal holding areas daily. Feeds animals and monitors eating habits. Observes animals for signs of illness, injury, or behavioral concerns or reports to the Medical Officer or Manager. Safely handles animals to reduce stress and promote positive interactions, provides basic rooming enrichment activities and maintains activity logs to ensure accurate identification of animals with labeled cages and kennel cards. Launders bedding and sanitizes bowls and equipment. Maintains cleanliness of shelter grounds (trash removal, feces pickup, etc.) Stocks and organizes supplies in kennels and intake areas. Maintains equipment, notifies management of repairs needed, ensures tools are stored properly. Enters medical and behavior data into database. Assists with vaccinations, medications, and medical care as directed. Supports adoption services, shelter tours, and volunteer orientations as needed. Assists with animal transport as needed. Performs general facility maintenance (mopping, sweeping, emptying trash etc.). Ensures proper sanitization protocols are followed by all shelter personnel, volunteers, community service. Uses computers to input and update records and reports accurately.

Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by previous experience and/or training involving animal handling and kennel experience; basic computer skills; strong communication and teamwork skills; ability to work in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment; must be detail-oriented and dependable; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Data Utilization :

Requires the ability to calculate and/or tabulate data. Includes performing subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations. Ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape with various animal control devices and equipment.

Human Interaction :

Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations. Must be able to perform under considerable stress when confronted with an emergency. Must be compassionate and adaptable to managing conflict on a routine basis. Must be able to cope with the grief associated with euthanasia.

Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.

Verbal Aptitude :

Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information. Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, and to follow oral and written instruction. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of administrative or professional languages including veterinary, legal and 10 code terminology.

Mathematical Aptitude :

Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.

Functional Reasoning :

Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Situational Reasoning :

Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

Physical Ability :

Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials (50 plus pounds without assistance). Must be able to use body members to work, move, or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.

Sensory Requirements :

Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Must be able to coordinate hands, feet and eyes in using equipment.

Environmental Factors :

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease, pathogenic substances, animal attacks, or animal bites.
