Under the direction of the Enrichment Coordinator, this position will work to maintain individualized enrichment and training protocols commensurate with the mission of STPAS for the animals in our care. This position will ensure each ward species receives the best stimulation and care for it to be a well developed specimen of it’s species [canine and feline alike]. This position attends directly to the emotional and behavioral well being of the animals, both canine and feline. The ability to deal well with the public, assist them with animal related questions, receiving and adopting out animals will be required. The ability to work weekends and holidays will be required. Any other duties assigned by the Enrichment Coordinator will be required, most often including cleaning and care when necessity dictates for foundational operations.

Temperament testing dogs using the SAFER protocols. Building and ensuring a rotation of all qualifying dogs through a daily playgroup. Building and ensuring a fully functional canine enrichment program that improves and maintains a high quality of life during shelter stay. Temperament testing cats using the FAS scoring system and making recommendations for adoption program, foster program, barn cat program and working closing with the Community Cat Program Manager. Building and ensuring a feline enrichment program and making actionable change to improve their quality of life during shelter stay. Giving counsel to admin staff on animal’s with behavioral issues, and identifying training needs. Be able to understand and implement basic animal training by STPAS policy expectations. Conduct dog-on-dog introductions with potential adopters, when requested. Feline adoption showing with special felines also may be requested. Assist and maintain adequate signage and documentation [on kennels, around building, and within electronic record system] Work with administrative staff to develop and maintain a proprietary system at STPAS for both feline and canines Maintain optimal kennel environment by giving daily in-kennel enrichment to canines, and optimal cattery environment by ensuring in-cage enrichment to felines. Communicates with Programs staff about dog and cat behavior updates, adoption promotions opportunities unique to individual dogs and cats. Daily cleaning and care of animal kennels and facilities; includes feeding, watering, etc. The ability to euthanize animals will be required Receiving and adopting out animals; Aids the public by answering questions about Animal Control Shelter operations and adoptions; Communicate as needed information relating to Parish ordinances and pet-related questions Additional duties will include answering the phones and clerical duties as required Understand and adhere to municipal and parish animal control laws and other laws pertaining to animal care and control Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with Parish policies and procedures Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions Required to work all emergency events as required for the event if designated essential Regular, consistent attendance is required Any other duties as assigned

Competencies:

Minimum one year of work OR volunteer experience in animal sheltering, public or private. Understanding of the plight of Open-Admission Animal Sheltering. Employee must be able to operate basic office equipment, office computer and software, and other specialty equipment needed for the position. Preferred abilities include knowledge of animal control procedures, knowledge of the proper use of cleaning and disinfectants used in facilities to house animals, excellent in customer relations, and has the ability to handle a work environment that can change on a daily basis. Employee should have knowledge of animal training equipment. Employee should understand industry language and be able to discern animal behavior and communicate it to other staff, volunteers and the public effectively and professionally.

Work Environment :

The incumbent works in a typical office environment with little or no exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards. Position does involve constant exposure to animals. Occasional duties may require travel or working in non-office environment.

Physical Demands:

Medium work. Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. If someone can do medium work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary and light work.

Required Education/Qualifications :

High School diploma or equivalent GED is required. A valid Driver’s License is required. Animal Behaviorist educational background desired but not required. Verifiable Animal [Canine] Training experience required. Be a Louisiana Certified Animal Euthanasia Technician or be able to successfully complete the first offered

LSU C.A.E.T.

course following being hired. Must complete FEMA courses assigned.
