Role:
The Part-Time Zoning and Codes Officer will be responsible for enforcing the adopted zoning ordinances, building codes, and other property-related regulations located within city limits of Lone Jack. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining property values, ensuring public safety, and promoting the quality of life for our residents. Key Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to): Investigating alleged violations of zoning ordinances, building codes, and other property maintenance regulations. Responding to citizen complaints regarding code enforcement issues. Conducting site visits and inspections to identify potential violations. Issuing notices of violation and citations as necessary. Working with property owners to achieve voluntary compliance. Maintaining accurate records of investigations, communications, and enforcement actions. Preparing reports and presenting findings to the Planning Commission, Board of Aldermen as required. Providing information and assistance to the public regarding zoning and code requirements. Collaborating with other departments (e.g., Public Works, Fire Department) on related issues. Attending meetings, training, and workshops as required.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or G.E.D. required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, public administration, construction management, or a related field preferred. Previous experience in code enforcement, zoning administration, building inspection, or a related regulatory field strongly preferred. Knowledge of local zoning ordinances, building codes (e.g., International Residential Code, International Building Code), and property maintenance codes. Ability to interpret and apply complex regulations and legal documents. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain complex information clearly and concisely to diverse audiences. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to de-escalate difficult situations and work effectively with the public. Proficiency in using computer software for record-keeping, report generation, and communication. Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks efficiently. Valid Missouri Driver’s License and a good driving record. Ability to walk, stand, and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
