Job Description

Director of Animal Shelter (DPW-Animal Shelter) (Provisional) 3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars Buffalo, NY 14202 JOB An incumbent to a position in this class directs the work of the Animal Shelter Division in the Department of Public Works, Parks & Streets. The Director of Animal Shelter has responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the shelter and for the care of the animals housed therein 24 hours a day – seven (7) days a week. The incumbent is responsible for implementing and ensuring adherence to animal shelter policies and procedures in accordance with laws and regulations relating to animal care and control. He/she must be firm but courteous in his dealings with the general public especially dog owners whose animals have been picked up by Animal Shelter employees. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Commissioner of Public Works, Parks and Streets or a designee, but details of methods and procedures are developed by the employee within broad limits of prescribed policy. Has direct control over personnel assigned to the Animal Shelter.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Oversees all operations of the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter;Oversees the administrative responsibility of the animal shelter, including scheduling, payroll, purchasing, and the preparation of and adherence to the City budget;Oversees all aspects of animal care including but not limited to intake, daily care, evaluations, adoptions and euthanasia;Oversees all employees of the animal shelter;Oversees activities of the animal shelter office which handles paperwork and payments related to adoptions and other animal shelter services;Coordinates with animal shelter volunteers regarding activities, events and donations;Collaborates with other animal shelters and animal care facilities to ensure ongoing updates, information sharing, and coordination of service agreements as required;Coordinates training on animal handling, animal care, and shelter cleanliness for animal shelter employees;Gathers and reviews data and trends in animal care standards to modify operations or practices as needed;Ensures animal shelter and animal control operate within compliance of New York State Agriculture and Market Laws;Oversees shelter maintenance and ensures shelter meets health and safety codes;Oversees inventory and ensures all materials and supplies are maintained;Oversees and helps maintain detailed records to comply with relevant laws and regulations;Is responsible for staying well-informed with current animal control laws, ordinances and regulations in relation to animal shelters, animal control, and relevant areas;Works directly with the public with relation to surrenders, adoptions, lost pet retrievals, and other related activities;Informs Commissioner or designee of changes in laws or regulations which affect the animal shelter;Informs Commissioner or designee of staffing concerns, budgetary concerns, capacity concerns, or other concerns requiring immediate attention;Performs related duties as required.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of public administration including personnel and budget preparation and administration;Thorough knowledge of organizational and management practices as applied to the analysis and evaluation of programs, polices and procedures;Thorough knowledge of the care and handling of dogs and small animals including safety precautions necessary in handling vicious or diseased animals;Thorough knowledge of the ordinances, rules and regulations governing the operation of the animal shelter;Knowledge of medical procedures and treatments related to animal care;Ability to understand and interpret written material;Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates;Ability to acquire confidence and skill in handling of dogs and small animals;Ability to be firm but courteous of the general public;Ability to maintain records and reports;Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
