Job Description
Canine Specialist Helen O. Krause Animal Foundation, Inc. Dillsburg, PA The Helen O. Krause Animal Foundation, Inc. (HOKAFI) is a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter for abandoned, abused and stray dogs and cats located in Dillsburg, Pennsylvania. The shelter is run primarily by a dedicated corps of volunteers and governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Foundation depends entirely on the private sector for funding through donations, membership dues, grants and fundraising activities. The shelter, founded by the late Helen Opperman Krause, sits on approximately two acres of landscaped grounds in a rural community and consists of a state-of-the-art main cat shelter built in 1999, a remodeled cat shelter annex and a dog kennel. At any given time, this complex is home to as many as 100 cats and kittens and 10 dogs.
Job Overview:
The Canine Specialist plays a critical role in caring for and ensuring the well-being of all canine residents at the Helen Krause Animal Foundation shelter. This position works collaboratively with the Shelter Manager, kennel technicians, volunteers, and other staff to ensure that the general care and maintenance of canine residents meets the principles and objectives of the Helen 0. Krause Animal Foundation, Inc., under the policies set by the Board of Directors.
Duties:
- Ensure appropriate canine care and handling, maintaining the highest standards for all animals entrusted to the shelter.
- Ensure appropriate volunteer and staff coverage and train all new and existing staff and volunteers on proper procedures.
- Ensure that HOKAFI complies with all current Pennsylvania Dog Law regulations. Provide updates to the board and/or make recommendations for changes based on new or changing regulations.
- Manage education and public relations opportunities, which include coordinating with the Public Relations Manager to assist in shelter
- related programs/special projects, as well as assist in educating the public on canine information/current issues.
- Communicate weekly and as needed with the President of the Board of Directors and other Board of Director members on organizational and policy matters or changes.
- Manage supplies & inventory, which includes maintaining proper inventory, reordering supplies, when necessary for canine residents, as well as ensuring proper inventory rotation so that food supplies are utilized prior to expiration dates.
Requirements:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required At least 2 years of canine handling experience Possesses a strong passion for HOKAFI’s mission and is interested in both supporting it as well as furthering it. Demonstrated track record of successfully multitasking with positive, measurable results. Possesses excellent organizational skills and is detail oriented. Adapts to change. Works effectively without direct supervision. Strong oral and written communication skills. Promotes a team-oriented, inclusive, and respectful workplace environment. Working Conditions Some evening, weekend and holiday shifts may be required Some fundraising and event attendance may be required Comfortable with regular exposure to animal odors, diseases, possible contagious conditions, bites, scratches, animal waste, and moderate noise levels. Must be able to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear, stoop, bend, squat, kneel, grasp, grip, put fingers together firmly and reach above and below shoulder level and lift, push or pull 50 pounds for situations of moving and lifting materials or supplies, repetitively use hands to operate computers. Must be able to physically handle all canine breeds, sizes and temperaments as part of the position.
