About Us:
Unicoi County Animal Shelter is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit located in Erwin, Tennessee. We operate under an interlocal agreement with three local governing bodies and are dedicated to public safety, community outreach, and animal welfare. In partnership with the Unicoi County Animal Welfare Board and local government entities, we provide progressive animal control services and compassionate care to the animals and residents of our community.
Position Summary:
We are hiring a professional and dependable Animal Control Officer. This part-time role involves fieldwork, shelter operations, public education, and collaboration with local agencies. Ideal candidates will be calm under pressure, safety-conscious, and committed to animal welfare and public service.
Key Responsibilities:
- Respond to and investigate animal control calls in compliance with local, state, and federal laws
- Determine appropriate outcomes based on evidence, regulations, and shelter protocols
- Perform shelter operations including animal intake, health assessments, and daily care
- Participate in shelter cleaning, feeding, and animal welfare routines
- Work closely with the Unicoi County Animal Welfare Board and other local stakeholders
- Operate professionally in high-stress or potentially dangerous situations
- Complete all required training, including certification in humane euthanasia
- Collaborate across jurisdictions with multiple organizations and agencies
- Support public education and outreach efforts on responsible pet ownership
- Maintain accurate records and reports of all field and shelter activities
- Understand and carry out humane euthanasia when necessary due to illness, injury, or unresolvable behavioral issues
Qualifications:
- Experience in animal control, shelter operations, law enforcement, or a related field preferred
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and conflict-resolution skills
- Ability to work independently and in cooperation with a team
- Familiarity with applicable animal welfare laws
- Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a background check
- Willingness to obtain and maintain euthanasia certification and other required training
- Ability to lift and handle animals, including dogs of varying sizes
- Capable of lifting, carrying, and transporting equipment, food, crates, and supplies
- Ability to bend, kneel, and stand for extended periods, often in outdoors or shelter.
