Regular and Reliable attendance requiredGENERAL DESCRIPTIONUnder the direct supervision of a Sergeant, the Adult Detention Officeris responsible forensuring the safety and security of detainees housed within thedetention facility. These detaineesmay include individuals charged with both felony and misdemeanoroffenses. The duties of theAdult Detention Officer are carried out in accordance with federal,state, and local laws. The rolerequires collaboration across different divisions and departments withinthe Sheriff’s Office andfrequent interaction with external partners such as Circuit and DistrictCourts, Public Defenders,Prosecuting Attorneys, and the public. In performing these duties, theAdult Detention Officermust demonstrate a strong sense of initiative, attention to detail, andthe ability to complete tasksindependently with minimal supervision.
To qualify for the position, candidates must meet specific certificationrequirements. These programs are essential to ensure compliance with stateregulations and to equipemployees with the necessary skills to handle detainee management,maintain facility security,and uphold safety standards. If an employee is unable to meet thesecertification requirementswithin the specified timeframe, it may result in disqualification fromthe role.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIESOne of the key responsibilities of the Adult Detention Officer is toprocess detainees asthey enter the facility. This includes verifying arrest documentation,overseeing bookingprocedures, and ensuring all necessary stepssuch as taking photographs,fingerprints,and obtaining DNA s absare completed. The Adult Detention Officer isalsoresponsible for managing detainees’ personal property, includingsecuring any cash orvaluable items they possess.
Maintaining facility security is another primary duty. The AdultDetention Officerconducts regular inspections, searches detainees for contraband,supervises the cleaningof cells, manages detainee correspondence, and ensures accurateheadcounts aremaintained. These measures are critical to maintaining a secureenvironment andpreventing any disruptions or potential threats.
