CORRECTIONS SERGEANT GENERAL DEFINITION
This is corrections security and custody work, overseeing the work of a group of Corrections Officers and other staff. An employee in this position, through work performed by subordinate staff, ensures the care, custody and control of inmates in a Lehigh County correctional facility. The Corrections Sergeant maintains the general security of the facility by personal observation, repeated tours of the facility, enforcing institutional policies and procedures and communicating with and directing staff and inmates. The Corrections Sergeant coordinates his work with the Shift Commander and passes both routine and exceptional information to the Shift Commander and further up the chain of command via verbal and written reports.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK
(Illustrative Only) Responds to emergency situations and directs personnel as needed. Administers First Aid/CPR and applies the departments use-of-force policy in a hands-on manner. Supervises Corrections Officers in the operation of housing units, control rooms, admission and discharge of inmates, and all other correctional officer assignments. Receives and resolves inmate complaints and conducts investigations as needed. Conducts housing unit inspections and enforces sanitation standards. Ensures inmate property is properly confiscated, logged, stored, controlled and reissued. Navigates through the departments jail information management system. Coordinates with other facility departments and offices to solve problems. Conducts performance coaching and counseling of staff and initiates discipline in accordance with facility, department, and County policy directives. Maintains an accurate daily log of all activities performed on assigned shift, writes incident reports, inmate misconducts and other reports. Coordinates and performs inmate escorts, transports and the collection or urine samples. Monitors movement of inmates, staff, volunteers, and visitors. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the rules, policies and procedures relating to the operation of a correctional facility. Thorough knowledge of correctional management methods and techniques for the care and custody of inmates. Thorough knowledge of the departments jail information management system. Initial and continued qualification in departmental handgun and shotgun. Initial and continued qualification in batons, chemical agents and other less lethal technologies. Ability to plan and supervise the performance of subordinate staff. Ability to direct staff quickly and calmly in emergencies. Ability to understand and follow both verbal and written instructions. Ability to keep records and to write clear and concise reports. Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade or GED. One to two years experience as a Corrections Officer. Or any equivalent combination of acceptable training and experience which has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities cited above.
