Description of Work
Reporting to the Correctional Housing Unit Manager I, this position is responsible for the first line supervision of Correctional Officer IIs. This position’s responsibilities include the following:
Assign lower-level custody staff to an area or post. Evaluate and oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security, and welfare of offenders is maintained
Coordinate work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy
Manage a facility on occasion of being the highest-ranking custody staff on the premises or the Officer-in-Charge (OIC)
Ensure that staff are fully trained, and that proper conduct, actions, and procedures are being followed
Maintain facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance, health, and safety of offenders
Communicate effective instruction/direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies situations
Respond to emergency situations such as distress codes, escapes, and transportation of offenders
Conduct and/or supervise searches of offenders, offender living areas and work areas for contraband Investigate and act when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints
Prepare, review reports and complete performance evaluations on subordinate staff

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. The selected candidate may be selected to work any shift and will work weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 staff coverage.

The Dept. of Adult Correction is responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as the division of Community Supervision. Other divisions include Administration, Compliance & Accreditation, Comprehensive Health Services, Internal Affairs & Intelligence Operations, Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission, and Rehabilitation & Reentry.

Nash Correctional Institution:

Nash Correctional Institution is a medium custody facility located in Nashville, Nash County NC. It houses approximately 796 male offenders. The facility provides offender labor to two Correction Enterprises operations located on site: the Optical Plant and the Print Plant. The Optical Plant manufactures eyeglasses for customers such as Medicaid and the Division of Services for the Blind. The Print Plant is a full-service print shop dedicated to printing services for state government agencies, public school systems, state community colleges and universities, and non-profit organizations.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
