Position Summary:
The Deputy Warden is responsible for assisting the Warden in the overall administration, direction, and coordination of operations within the county correctional facility. This role involves overseeing custody, security, facility operations, staff supervision, policy enforcement, and inmate programs to ensure the institution functions safely, security, and in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist the Warden in planning, organizing and directing daily operations of the facility. Support the Warden in strategic planning, policy development, and implementation of institutional goals.
Collaborate with and assist the Administrative Assistant with scheduling, documentation correspondence, and office coordination tasks. Perform a variety of administrative duties, including report preparation, data collection and analysis, maintaining records, and ensuring proper documentation of facility operations. Supervise and evaluate correctional staff, including captains, lieutenants, sergeants, correctional officers, and civilian personnel.
Oversee inmate custody, discipline, classification, and rehabilitation programs.
Conduct facility inspections and audits to identify safety, security, and operational issues.
Assist with budget preparation, resource allocation, and monitoring of expenditures. Coordinate emergency response procedures and act as the incident commander in the Warden’s absence.
Participate inhering, training, and professional development of staff.
Serve as acting Warden in the Wardens absence. Investigate major incidents, grievances, and compliments, ensure appropriate documentation and follow-up.
Liaise with external agencies, law enforcement, courts and community organizations as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in corrections, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or management role.
- Strong knowledge of correctional facility operations, inmate management, and security procedures.
Strong leadership, communication, and crisis management skills.
Familiarity with applicable federal and state correctional laws, PREA standards, and accreditation process.
Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, Public Administration, or related field preferred. Ability to pass background check, drug screening, and psychological evaluation.
Working Conditions:
Position requires on-site presence in a secure correctional facility. Subject to emergency call-in extended hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Physical Requirements:
You must be able to walk, stand, sit, and climb stairs for extended periods in a secure correctional environment.
Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations, including running, restraining individuals, and performing basic physical interventions.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
Visual and auditory acuity is required for monitoring surveillance equipment, inmate behavior, and communication devices.
May be exposed to stressful, physically demanding, and potentially hazardous conditions.
