May 11, 2025 This is professional services and scientific work in analyzing physical evidence collected in connection with criminal investigations while assigned to the State Police Crime Laboratory. Responsibilities include performing latent print, firearms, and other technical examinations, collaborating with law enforcement officers and other forensics experts in the processing of crime scenes, and testifying as an expert witness in court and administrative hearings. Additional responsibilities include conducting technical research in areas of expertise and submitting results for publication in forensic journals and preparing and presenting classroom and information presentations in Criminalistics and forensic subjects. Work is performed under limited supervision. Candidates will be required to take a “Form Blindness” test. While successfully passing this test is not a requirement for employment, individuals who pass are more likely to be successful in pattern interpretation. Employees in this job classification are required to travel out of state and attend approximately 19 weeks of training at the National Firearms Examiner Academy or an equivalent approved training program.
Primary responsibilities include:
+ Directs the processing and recording of and/or processes and records major crime scenes, autopsies, and related items such as vehicles in order to ensure evidence is identified, collected, and processed correctly. + Locates and develops latent prints from evidence; fingerprints and/or palmprints individuals and cadavers; and makes footwear and tire casts and impressions; and compares prints and impressions with known samples in order to establish positive identification and render expert opinion. + Examines and test fires firearms; microscopically examines spent bullets, cartridge casings, and rounds of ammunition; performs serial number restorations and fracture comparisons; compares typewriter and toolmark impressions; and analyzes gunpowder and primer residues and shotgun patterns in order to positively identify an item of evidence and render an expert opin
