DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class conducts preliminary and supplementary investigations related to major crimes, economic, special victim, cold case, property, domestic violence, narcotics, and juvenile offenses within the Sheriff’s Office. Employees interview victims, complainants, witnesses, and suspects, as well as identify, collect, analyze, and preserve physical evidence, prepare reports, develop sources, and testify in court. Work may involve general criminal investigation or highly specialized types of investigations, such as those relating to vice, fraud, sex crimes, domestic violence, and narcotic offenses; crimes against, by, and/or pertaining to youths; or application of modern investigative techniques, sound judgment, and independent initiative in pursuit of work objectives and carrying an independent case load. Work involves frequent public contact which requires tact, supplemented with specific directions from superior officers. The employees are subject to hazards associated with law enforcement including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as exposure to atmospheric conditions, noise, vibration, and physical conditions. supervision and is evaluated through observation, review of reports, and discussion of case management.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND TASKS
Conducts initial and follow-up investigations of all crimes including, but not limited to; assaults, theft, fraud, identity theft, sexual assaults, crimes against children, domestic violence, drug related and other criminal work as required; arrests offenders; identifies, collects, and preserves physical evidence; prepares written reports of investigative activities; testifies in court regarding investigative activities. Preserves crime scenes, collects evidence, and processes crime scenes by taking photographs and video color photography, processes latent prints, obtains tool, tire and shoe impressions, collects hair and fiber evidence, collects other physical evidence, labels and packages evidence; analyzes all evidence and documents findings in reports; utilizes special identification equipment to determine bullet trajectories. Cooperates with members of other local, state, and federal law enforcement and investigative agencies of multiple jurisdictions in the identification, location, apprehension, and arrest of offenders and in the investigation of criminal activities. Prepares case files and notes related to case management; prepares documents for district attorney and presentations to court. Presents evidence and testimony in court. Detectives generally work Monday through Friday but are required to be “On Call” at specific times during the year which requires them to work nights and weekends and during their “On Call” week. A Detective may be called on short notice depending on the needs of the agency.
ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES
Depending upon work assignment may be involved in either conducting the crime scene analysis or conducting the total investigation.
RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION GUIDELINES KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

DESIRABLE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of a two (2) year Associate Degree in Criminal Justice, supplemented by special training in investigative techniques with experience in law enforcement work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be at least 20 years of age and possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License and have completed the minimum requirements established by the North Carolina Justice Training and Standards Council for Certified Law Enforcement Officers.
