Job Description

Lieutenant of Investigations 4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars Tallahassee, FL Department Public Safety Responsibilities Oversees the operations of the Law Enforcement Investigations section, Intelligence Officer, the Drug and Violent Crimes section and the Evidence & Property section at the FSU Police Department. Assigns and oversees investigative cases for review and ensures cases are appropriately marked for routing. Manages criminal investigative processes and determines the final case dispositions as directed by the Support Services Captain. Oversees proactive and high-risk operations, to include, but not limited to, search warrants, confidential informant management, arrest warrants, undercover operations, plainclothes operations, surveillance, drug investigations/operations, violent crime investigations and other law enforcement details as needed. Oversees criminal investigations in the interests of the State of Florida and FSU, with the objective of ascertaining all available information related to an investigation. Receives and/or initiates investigative assignments & priorities for the FSU Police Department. Directly supervises the Criminal Investigations section, the Drug and Violent Crimes section and the Evidence and Property section. Oversees follow-up investigations & proactive police investigative operations for the FSU Police Department. This position is tasked with the pursuit, apprehension, and arrest of law violators or suspected law violators. This position supervises a law enforcement team responsible for the pursuit, apprehension, and arrest of law violators or suspected law violators. Analyzes criminal trends and threats and shares information to the department, other law enforcement agencies, and other departments who have a need to know and respond to such information. Consults with State Attorney’s office on criminal matters and provides testimony in court for depositions and in sworn statements for warrants and subpoenas. Contributes expertise to department and other entities and conducts law enforcement training based on expertise. May serve in the capacity of a lead investigator when assigned to a major criminal case, i.e., homicide or arson, which may require the close cooperation with other professions such as fire inspection, medical personnel, or laboratory analyst. Supervises reporting USPS staff in the Criminal Investigations, Drug and Violent Crimes, Intelligence Officer and Property & Evidence sections. Completes employee performance evaluations, provides opportunities for professional development, approves time and leave reports, approves and arranges travel and assists with hiring processes and internships. Oversees sources of information such as undercover informants who can provide detailed and accurate reporting on locations, suspects, amounts and types of criminal activity. Oversees the activities of such informants on a regular basis to determine the reliability of information they develop and provide. Oversees the DEA Relationship and Task-Force Officer. Oversees asset sharing and investigative partnerships with TPD, LCSO, DEA and other agencies. Plans and supervises the use of surveillance equipment and other police personnel assigned to investigators; this will include the operation of cameras, recorders and detection devices used to develop evidence admissible in any subsequent court proceedings. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and four years of experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and eight years of experience. (
