Purpose of the position:

The primary purpose of this position is to perform specialized law enforcement work in the investigation of crime scenes to gather and analyze evidence for the Sheriff’s Office. Associates Degree in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Intelligence, Compute Minimum Education, Training and/or

Experience:

Associates Degree in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Intelligence, Computer Science, or other related field, and two (2) years of experience in law enforcement, forensics, or crime scene analysis; or an equivalent combination of training and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above; Must be 21 years of age. License or Certification Required by

Statute or Regulation:

Valid NC driver’s license Essential Functions of the position: Perform a detailed search and analysis of crime scenes using various technical procedures including but not limited to photography, fingerprint detection/identification, casting of footprints, and other criminal investigative procedures. Perform detailed technological analysis of computers, cell phones and other electronic devices to gather evidence. Responsible for control of the handling, storage, and shipment of evidence. Work closely with investigators, deputy sheriffs, other law enforcement agencies, and the general public. Assemble and organize statements/evidence for presentation in court; attend court to present evidence/testimony. Handle, store and ship evidence to insure that the chain of custody is maintained. View/photograph autopsies of homicides and suspicious suicides. Coordinate all aspects of the sale of evidence. Performs other related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Knowledge of modern crime scene investigative practices and procedures. Knowledge of federal, state and local laws relative to gathering, analyzing and storing evidence. Knowledge of the standard practices, materials, techniques, and equipment associated with the crime scene investigations. Skills in the use of computers, cameras, fingerprint kits, and various other equipment used in gathering and analyzing crime scene evidence. Ability to use sound judgment in situations and to adopt quick, effective courses of action. Ability to apply interpretation of laws to specific situations. Ability to prepare reports. Ability to present court testimony effectively. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships In order to uphold internal pay parity and equity, salaries are non-negotiable for new and current Buncombe County employees.
