Job Responsibilities
The South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (Academy) is seeking a qualified traffic safety instructor to join the Traffic Safety Unit. This position is funded through a 2007 grant award from the Office of Highway Safety and Justice Programsand plays a vital role in promoting highway safety through law enforcement education and training.
Duties include the following:
Duties include:
Perform instructional duties in assigned classes to include all courses identified as traffic safety courses for the Basic Law Enforcement program, such as basic traffic law, traffic direction, traffic stops, collision investigation and reporting, DUI Detection and SFST, and practical problems.
Conduct classroom and hands-on training in assigned areas of the Traffic Safety program.
Properly, accurately, and promptly maintain position requirements, instructor activity sheets, PowerDMS policy reviews, ACADIS training videos, and any other training required to maintain certifications.
Research, develop, and update lesson plans and other materials to address current laws, statistics, and investigative trends and techniques in the Traffic Safety program.
Ensure that all Academy standards and testing requirements are met within the instructional development programs. Enforces Academy student discipline policies.
Perform law enforcement duties during times of critical incidents, whether natural or man-made crisis events requiring law enforcement response. Required to do “ride-a-longs” and assist other law enforcement agencies (i.e., state, local, city, county, etc.) in times of need or as required.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
Salary:
The hiring salary starts at $59,506 and goes up commensurate with LEO instructional experience.
Minimum requirements:
High school diploma and eight (8) years of law enforcement experience or
Associate degree and six (6) years of law enforcement experience or Bachelor’s degree and four (4) years of law enforcement experience and
Experience must include two (2) years of road experience and
Currently certified DMT, SFST, and SMD and
Currently certified S.C. Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) or
Currently certified LEO in another •jurisdiction with full powers of arrest with the ability to become an
S.C. LEO.
Must obtain
BID, SMD
Instructor, and SFST Instructor certifications within one (1) year of hire.

Preferred Qualifications
We prefer that you currently possess the following:
Two (2) years of experience writing lesson plans and/or developing training material.
Basic Instructor Development (BID), Speed Measuring Device (SMD) Instructor, and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) Instructor certification
Additional Comments
About You:
Ability to teach all Traffic Safety related courses and curriculum.
Extensive knowledge of contemporary LE principles, practices, techniques, tactics, and methods. Able to research and develop comprehensive lesson plans in assigned training areas. Responsible for controlling all training delivery in assigned areas of instruction.
Adheres to safety and testing procedures. Ability to speak and write clearly and effectively; analyze problems and make appropriate recommendations.
Able to coordinate the work of students and enforce student discipline in a fair, but firm manner. Able to work effectively under limited supervision using individual discretion and prudent judgment. Work in a professional manner with others in a team environment to achieve common goals and objectives.
Adhere to the chain-of-command and agency policies/procedures.
Manage time effectively, completes administrative work, meets deadlines, problem solves, and accurately completes assignments.
Maintain good physical condition to facilitate and conduct demonstrations.
Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed. Overnight travel will be required.
