Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is searching to fill a Special Agent position in our Crime Scene Unit. The ideal candidate should have a bachelor’s degree, integrity, and a strong desire for public service.
General Responsibility:
Maintain competency/proficiency in crime scene investigations. Perform duties as a Class I law enforcement officer for the State of South Carolina. Plan, conduct, and complete investigations/examinations of difficult crimes, or conduct portions of difficult investigations/examinations. Represent SLED, Forensic Services, and the Crime Scene department in a professional manner at all times.
Specific Duties:
Under limited supervision and in accordance with laboratory and departmental protocols and procedures, conduct crime scene investigations, issue summaries of the investigations, and provide expert testimony in judicial proceedings. Under limited supervision and in accordance with laboratory and departmental protocols and procedures, perform job functions in additional crime scene related disciplines as assigned by the department supervisor and provide expert testimony in judicial proceedings. Display professionalism in the workplace. Demonstrate the ability to work independently and as a team member. Maintain assigned equipment in good, working condition. Maintain a neat and orderly workspace. Successfully complete additional assignments and/or duties as assigned by the department supervisor. Achieve and maintain competency through continued training and yearly proficiency testing in crime scene investigation and additional crime scene related disciplines as assigned by the department supervisor. Maintain law enforcement certification and perform tasks associated with being a sworn law enforcement officer in the State of South Carolina and a Special Agent with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division with statewide authority. Minimum and Additional Requirements Must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university with science courses or Bachelor’s degree with relevant experience in crime scene investigations. Must demonstrate the ability to work in dynamic crime scene environments and perform effectively under stressful conditions. Must be currently certified as a Class I law enforcement officer OR be willing to successfully complete training at the SC Criminal Justice Academy and obtain Class I Law Enforcement Certification. Must successfully complete the Crime Scene Training Program by demonstrating competency in all the appropriate areas of testing. Must be able to maintain proficiency in appropriate categories of testing. Position requires availability for call out 24 hours per day and requires travel and may require some overnight travel. Must be able to process indoor and outdoor crime scenes in varying climate conditions for extended periods of time. Must be able to move and transport articles/items that may be found at a crime scene over 25lbs. Must be able to work around and handle deceased persons.
