The crossing guard position requires the applicant to work a split shift that includes mornings and afternoons. This seasonal position coincides with the Orange County Public Schools’ school year and is part-time (15-20 hours per week).
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This position requires the performance of traffic safety work at designated school crossing areas. Work is performed under the general supervision of the patrol supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The tasks listed below represent most of the time spent working in this position. Supervisor may assign additional tasks within the scope of this classification as necessary.
Requires constant standing, speaking and hearing; occasional bending/stooping, pushing, pulling and lifting up to 10 lbs. Requires visual acuity with respect to discernment of shapes and colors related to traffic safety. Agility is required at a level that would allow avoidance of an imminent danger from vehicles.
Is subject to working conditions involving constant extreme weather conditions, very frequent exposure to insects, frequent excessive noise.
Exposure to moving vehicles requires awareness of surroundings and sounds/noises.
Performs any other duties or tasks that may be assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Must be able to perceive and correct potential safety hazards and direct and regulate the flow of traffic within the school crossing are to which guard is assigned, ensuring the safety of the students traveling to- and from school.
Must maintain a positive public image and set a good example for students; setting the example for following traffic safety laws, etc
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma required. Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License.
Must be 18 years of age
Must successfully complete the school crossing guard training as provided by the Apopka Police Department.

City issued radio, safety vest, and traffic control signs/devices
