VAN MONITOR 2025-2026

6am to 10am & 1pm to 5pm 180

Days Start Date:

August 28, 2025, with training days prior

Job Goals:

The Van Monitor plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, well-being, and appropriate conduct of students during transportation to and from school and school-related activities. Working in coordination with the Van Driver, the Monitor assists students with boarding and exiting the vehicle, helps secure students safely, and maintains a positive and safe environment throughout the route. This role is especially vital in supporting students with special needs.

Transportation Director Experience and Training:

1. High school diploma or equivalent preferred 2. Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing 3. Demonstrated ability to work with children, including those with special needs, in a respectful and supportive manner 4. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and maintain composure in stressful situations 5. Must be able to pass a CORI background check and fingerprinting as required by law 6. Physical capacity to assist students, and remain seated or mobile for extended periods.

Performance Responsibilities:

1. Assist students entering and exiting the van safely, including operation of seat belts, car seats, and booster seats 2. Provide direct supervision and behavioral support to students while in transit 3. Monitor student behavior and intervene when necessary to ensure safety and order; report unsafe or inappropriate conduct to the Director of Transportation 4. Communicate professionally and effectively with students, families, and staff 5. Utilize a two-way radio system to maintain communication with the administrative staff as needed 6. Follow all assigned schedules, routes, and instructions from supervisors with attention to detail and timeliness. 7. Maintain awareness of student medical or behavioral needs as trained and directed 8. Participate in all required training sessions including safety procedures, first aid, and crisis intervention as applicable 9. Perform additional duties as assigned to support student safety and compliance with transportation policies

Performance of the job will be evaluated on a yearly basis by the

Director of Transportation Physical Requirements:

The position requires a moderate amount of walking, standing, sitting and climbing stairs and step stool whenever necessary. Activities also include moderate physical exertion in body movement such as reaching, bending, twisting, grasping, pushing, and pulling of objects. The position requires lifting objects of 20 pounds on a frequent basis, and over 20 pounds occasionally.
