Job Description
SANITARIAN
The Town of Stratford is currently accepting applications for the position of
Sanitarian for the Health Department.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This is professional sanitary inspection work at the full performance level involving enforcement of the public health code.
Work involves responsibility for applying the knowledge of preventive medicine in community health and in reducing the level of potential threat to the individual citizen. Duties include inspection, investigations, monitoring employee education, surveying and report preparation. The work requires that the employees understand the laws, rules regulations governing the enforcement of environmental health codes for which they are responsible.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of Environmental Health Supervisor.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Inspects and approves for licensing a large volume of restaurants, food stores, mobile vendors, day care centers, public and semi-public swimming pools, milk dealers and other businesses, as provided by statute.
- Investigates environmental complaints such as: garbage/rubbish disposal, rodent and insect infestations, noise, air and water quality, disease vectors, mosquito control, obnoxious weeds and unsanitary environmental conditions.
- Educates food handlers; promotes training programs, gives advice to food service personnel on proper food sanitation techniques, and investigates food- borne illnesses.
- Reviews plans for food establishments for conformance with codes.
- Responds by telephone, in person, or in writing to persons seeking information regarding health rules and regulations, specific complaints, license requirements, and other environmental health problems.
- Investigates residential water and sewage problems; reviews plans for the installation or repair of private sewage disposal systems.
- Prepares reports of inspections and investigations.
- Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Thorough knowledge of the modem methods, principles and practices of public health sanitations.
- Considerable knowledge of the sanitary sciences, including bacteriology, biology, chemistry and personal hygiene.
- Considerable knowledge of the laws, ordinances and regulations governing environmental sanitation.
- Considerable ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Considerable ability to enforce health codes and regulations with firmness and tact.
- Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, associates, employers, representatives of outside agencies, and the general public.
QUALIFICATONS
Gradation from a four-year college or university course of study with major course work in environmental health, bacteriology or closely related field, plus two years of experience in environmental health, laboratory work or a related field.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be eligible for, and obtain, certification as a Registered Sanitarian from the State of Connecticut.
May be required to travel short distances on business.
SALARY RANGE
DOE:
$72,560.75 – $98,105.36
