ENGINEERING SPECIALIST 4

Naples, FL or Ft. Myers, FL 4294BR Job Description Join a dynamic engineering and modeling team within the South Florida Water Management District, supporting the operation and maintenance of essential water infrastructure, including water control structures and canals. This staff-level operational role offers a blend of office-based and field work, ideal for professionals eager to contribute to water management and infrastructure resilience across a beautiful and ecologically critical region. The position can be based at either the Naples or the Fort Myers Service Center.

Key Responsibilities:

Analyze the regional flood control system, evaluate rainfall and storm data, and assess system performance to support daily operations Deliver engineering services and informed decisions that advance the District’s strategic programs Conduct right-of-way and environmental resource permit reviews Provide GIS mapping support for reports, emergency response efforts, and general operational needs Assist with emergency management activities, including maintaining emergency standard operating procedures (SOPs), logistics support, and conducting rapid damage assessments Support technical review of capital project designs, focusing on operability, maintenance ease, and cost-effectiveness Communicate technical information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences, including field staff, engineers, non-engineers, and management teams

Preferred Knowledge and Experience:

Strong background in Hydrology and Hydraulics Familiarity with permitting programs, criteria, and practices Knowledge of construction methodologies and project operations Proficiency with GIS tools and mapping Ability to interpret construction plans, specifications, and technical reports Skilled in both written and verbal technical communication with a range of stakeholders, including developers, operational staff, and the public.

Conduct fieldwork in a variety of challenging environmental conditions, including remote and heavily vegetated areas Apply independent judgment and critical thinking to solve complex problems Manage time efficiently to meet strict deadlines and adapt to changing priorities Complete projects independently while keeping supervisors informed about deliverables and progress Maintain a strong commitment to teamwork, continuous improvement, and public service excellence This Position may be filled as either Engineering Specialist 4, Engineering Specialist 3, Engineering Specialist 2, or Engineering Specialist 1. This posted salary will range is reflective of the Engineering Specialist 4 level. If this position is filled at a lower level, the salary will be commensurate with that level.

Employment Guidelines/Experience:

Engineering Specialist 4: Bachelor of Science degree from an

ABET/EAC

accredited program in Civil, Construction, Environmental, Agricultural, Biological, or related engineering field and 4+ years of qualifying experience that demonstrates measurable career progression in water resource. Engineering Specialist 3: Bachelor of Science degree from an

ABET/EAC

accredited program in Civil, Construction, Environmental, Agricultural, Biological, or related engineering field and 2+ years of qualifying experience that demonstrates measurable career progression in water resource. Engineering Specialist 2: Bachelor of Science degree from an

ABET/EAC

accredited program in Civil, Construction, Environmental, Agricultural, Biological, or related engineering field and 1+ years of qualifying experience that demonstrates measurable career progression in water resource. Engineering Specialist 1: Bachelor of Science degree from an

ABET/EAC

accredited program in Civil, Construction, Environmental, Agricultural, Biological, or related engineering field and less than 1 year of qualifying experience that demonstrates measurable career progression in water resource. License(s) / Certification(s): Valid State of Florida Driver’s License required. License for Engineering Specialist 1 – 4: Requires a valid Engineer-In-Training certification, and candidate must work towards and attain a State of Florida Professional Engineer (PE) License.

Physical Requirements/ Working Environment:

Due to the District’s response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies, depending on assigned emergency response role.
