The Environmental Officer?s primary duties are to ensure that theship is in compliance with all applicable local, state, federal,and international environmental laws and regulations. TheEnvironmental Officer reports directly to the Master forenvironmental compliance related issues with a direct reportingrelationship to the Director of Environmental Compliance and InjuryPrevention. For all other shipboard matters, the EnvironmentalOfficer will report to the Staff Captain.
Career snapshot:
- Monitors and evaluates shipboard implementation of environmentaland select public health policies and programs
- Ensures that the oil and hazmat spill response equipment is readyfor immediate use and is properly stowed and marked
- Completes waste vendor due diligence surveys and site inspectionsin cooperation with Environmental Stewardship
- Maintains records on shipboard activities related to companyenvironmental policies, procedures, and programs including thestatus of environmental management programs and training whichoccurs on board, and provides weekly reports to the Master andEnvironmental Stewardship Department
- Evaluates shipboard environmental systems to determinecriticality of system defects/failures and recommends contingencyplans.
Verifies the functionality of the bilge water treatment andoverboard discharge systems weekly together with the engineer incharge as per AMOS.
