They are responsible for a wide range of tasks, spanning from routine maintenance to emergency response. Key Responsibilities and Duties of an
ETO:
Maintenance and Repair of Electrical and Electronic Systems:
This includes the upkeep and repair of crucial equipment such as navigation and communication devices, power generation and distribution systems, and automation controls.
Power Management:
ETOs oversee the ship’s power systems, including generators, switchboards, and distribution systems, ensuring a reliable power supply for various onboard functions.
Troubleshooting and Diagnostics:
They are skilled at diagnosing and resolving electrical and electronic malfunctions, ensuring the ship’s continued operation and minimizing downtime.
Compliance and Safety:
ETOs ensure that all electrical and electronic systems meet international regulations and safety standards. This includes conducting safety drills, maintaining emergency power systems, and ensuring equipment is properly grounded and insulated.
Emergency Response:
In critical situations like power outages or equipment failures, ETOs are essential for quick diagnosis and resolution of technical issues to ensure the safety of the ship and crew.
Training and Mentorship:
Experienced ETOs may train and mentor junior officers and cadets on the safe operation of electrical systems, contributing to a culture of teamwork and knowledge sharing. Coordination with
Shore-Based Technicians:
ETOs may also coordinate with technicians on shore when necessary to address complex issues or obtain specialized assistance.
Planned Maintenance:
They ensure that maintenance schedules for electrical and electronic equipment are planned and followed to prevent potential problems. Rotation varies. Could be a 28/14, 28/28, 14/14, 42/21, 30/30, etc
