The Regional Environmental Director will direct, plan, administer and supervise activities of the SCDES Lancaster Region office staff. This position will Identify environmental problems, often of a complex, multi-media nature, and identify appropriate solutions, and coordinates agency action.
Responsibilities:
Directs and coordinates activities of all SCDES Lancaster Region office staff representing SCDES’s Air, Land, and Water programs. Assigns or oversees the assignment of all work, shifting resources when necessary. Performs or supervises administrative duties associated with activity reporting, leave utilization, performance appraisals, travel reimbursement, vehicle utilization, procurement card usage, and requisition of supplies and equipment. Consults with and provides technical assistance to city, county, state and federal officials, industry leaders, developers and the general public concerning environmental issues of a broad and varied nature. Represents the agency through participation with local government entities in community meetings and educational settings, local meetings with civic and professional groups. Conducts public hearings/meetings for various program elements. Serves as media contact for environmental issues. Provides assistance and input to SCDES program areas on complex environmental problems, strategic planning, policy matter and special studies.
Conducts or supervises complaint investigations for all SCDES program areas. Emphasizes the importance of establishing a positive agency image through good customer service. Investigate, via social media, complaints received regarding information posted on social media. The investigation will include social media searches on the activity and location. Maintains regional emergency operations capability. Supervises emergency responses to oil spills, hazardous material incidence, fish kills and natural disasters. Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
A master’s degree in the natural or physical sciences, public health or related technical field and five (5) years of environmental experience; or a bachelor’s degree in the natural or physical sciences, public health or related technical field and six (6) years of environmental experience. Institutions of higher learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Preferred Qualifications
Thorough knowledge and understanding of applicable state and federal environmental health (air, land, and water) regulations.
Supervisory experience and experience leading an environmental health program. Data management skills. Proficiency with Microsoft office professional (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access). Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.
