Job Description

Deputy Fire Chief 3.8 3.8 out of 5 stars Longwood, FL Description This is a highly responsible administrative and professional position in planning, budgeting, directing and supervising all personnel, activities and operations of the Longwood Fire Department. Incumbent is responsible for the oversight of training and review of EMS procedures and protocols as well as oversight of emergency management/rescue operations. Collateral duties as Deputy Chief include serving as the City’s Director of Emergency Management in the absence of the Fire Chief. Work is performed with considerable administrative independence under the general policy direction of the Fire Chief and is reviewed through reports and conferences.

Planning, supervising, directing, scheduling and coordinating the work of shift personnel. Preparing and maintaining appropriate records and files. Coordinates, supervises and directs the fire protection, rescue, EMS and related activities. Reviews, develops, recommends and enforces policies; and procedures governing fire and EMS operations. Attends and participates in a variety of local, regional and State meetings, seminars, training sessions and conferences. Leads, prepares, and conducts training and drill sessions. Administrative duties assigned may include but are not limited to: Department EMS Coordinator, Infection Control Officer, Fleet Maintenance Coordinator, Logistics Section Coordinator, Planning Section Coordinator, Intelligence Liaison Officer or other management responsibilities as assigned by the Fire Chief. Oversees the maintenance of supplies and inventory on apparatus, vehicles and in the stations. Coordinates the purchasing of EMS supplies to ensure adequate quantities remain in stock. Assists in the preparation of the annual department budget and recommends items to be purchased. Evaluate the performance of employees and completes the appropriate documentation continuously throughout the year. Manages and coordinates remedial training or skills practice for employees. Manages, coordinates and documents disciplinary action and/or behavioral modification. Responds to alarms, emergencies, natural disaster and other incidents to supervise and direct the operation. May function as Incident Commander or fulfill other NIMS Command Staff functions as required. Reviews policies, practices and S.O.G.s to maintain concurrency with contemporary procedures and recommends updating when necessary. May serve as acting Fire Chief or Director as assigned. Follows and enforces safe working practices and has a working knowledge of safety practices and procedures in accordance with the City’s Safety and Health Program. All employees serve an essential role in the City’s disaster preparation and/or disaster recovery efforts, as may be designated by the City’s Emergency Manager.

Additional Duties :

Performs related tasks or other duties as required or assigned. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a field that qualifies for supplemental compensation pursuant to Florida Statute 633.42; supplemented by at least ten (10) years in fire suppression and emergency medical services, including considerable supervisory experience as determined by the Fire Chief. Possession of a Paramedic certificate valid in the state of Florida, including approval of the Department’s Medical Director and Fire Officer 2 or higher is required. Fire Service Instructor Certification preferred. Must meet and maintain minimum qualifications for position as established by the department and/or the State of Florida. Must maintain a Florida driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Must have or be able to complete ICS 100, 200, 300,400,700 and 800 courses within six (6) months of hire. Applicants who currently posses an Associate’s Degree and are pursuing a Bachelor’s degree are invited to apply; but will be required to complete their Bachelor’s Degree in a specific timeframe as a condition of employment. Thorough knowledge of municipal budgeting and finance at the department level. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in written format. Ability to effectively supervise others at fires and other emergencies. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public. Maintain physical endurance and agility commensurate with the requirements of the position. Must pass annual “fit for duty” medical physical exam as per

N.F.P.A. 1582.

Technical Requirements Ability to use standard office equipment, including multi-line telephones, personal computers, word processing and data base applications. Ability to operate multi-channel 2-way radios, mobile data terminals and the “command” screen of the Seminole County CAD system. Working Conditions This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force or more occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a respirator. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
