DESCRIPTION

The Director, Fire Academy is responsible for overseeing the management, planning, development, implementation, and coordination of the Fire Academy and Fire Science programs. This role integrates academic excellence with hands-on training fire academy trainees in fire science and emergency management, ensuring regulatory compliance, and driving program growth in support of the college’s mission to provide high-quality, safety-centered education.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Manages, plans, develops, and implements long-term goals and strategic plans for the Fire Academy and Fire Science program in alignment with the college’s mission.
Directs daily operations of the program, ensuring compliance with institutional policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory guidelines.
Coordinates the development, review, and enhancement of curriculum content to reflect current industry standards and best practices in fire science and emergency services.
Promotes the integration of technology and experiential learning methodologies to enrich classroom and hands-on training environments.
Supervises faculty and staff, including hiring, coaching, mentoring, training, development, scheduling, and performance evaluation.
Prepares, oversees, and analyzes program budgets; advocate for funding and allocate resources effectively to meet educational and operational goals.
Identifies and secures grants, sponsorships, and collaborative partnerships that enhance program capabilities and expand training opportunities.
Builds and maintains relationships with local, regional, and national fire service organizations to promote program visibility and provide real-world learning experiences for students.
Organizes and facilitates training sessions, workshops, and networking events for students and alumni to stay informed about industry trends and career development opportunities. Works in close collaboration with the Student Affairs department to enhance program impact.
Serves as a representative of the Fire Academy and Fire Science program on institutional committees and at conferences to promote the program and its successes.
Performs other duties as may be required or assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Option 1: Bachelor’s degree from a regionally or nationally accredited institution in Fire Science or closely related field.
Six (6) years of related field (e.g. Fire, Emergency Management, Public Safety, etc.).
Must possess the Two (2) following current and valid certifications from recognized industry leaders:
Fire Instructor I (Bureau of Fire Standards and Training)
Live Fire Instructor Training I Option 2: Bachelor’s degree from a regionally or nationally accredited institution.
Six (6) years of related field (e.g. Fire, Emergency Management, Public Safety, etc.).
Must possess the Two (2) following current and valid certifications from recognized industry leaders:
Fire Instructor I (Bureau of Fire Standards and Training)
Live Fire Instructor Training I Option 3: Associate’s degree from a regionally or nationally accredited institution in Fire Science or closely related field.
Ten (10) years of related field (e.g. Fire, Emergency Management, Public Safety, etc.).
Must possess the Two (2) following current and valid certifications from recognized industry leaders:
Fire Instructor I (Bureau of Fire Standards and Training)
Live Fire Instructor Training

I DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree from an accredited institution, preferably in Fire Science, Emergency Management, Education, or a related field.
Teaching experience in higher education.
Must possess any of the following professional certifications:
Fire Inspector I
Fire Inspector II
Fire Instructor II or III (Bureau of Fire Standards and Training)
Fire Officer I
Fire Officer

II KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge of fire science principles, equipment, safety regulations, and educational methodologies.
Familiarity with accreditation standards specific to fire science programs.
Ability to understand the college systems policies, and procedures related to Fire Science programs.
Ability to supervise and motivate others to achieve objectives.
Excellent planning and organizing skills; ability to anticipate outcomes.
Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, as well as critical thinking ability.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Ability to successfully develop and manage relationships both within and outside of college.
Excellent Microsoft Office 365 skills (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and the ability to become proficient in videoconferencing applications, including Teams/Zoom.
Ability to meet deadlines and work in a fast-paced multi-priority environment.
Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to exhibit a professional, courteous demeanor and interact effectively.
