Haralson County Fire Department Position Overview:

Haralson County is seeking an experienced, visionary Fire Chief to lead its Fire Department in providing top-quality fire protection, emergency medical services, and public safety to the community. The Fire Chief will manage all operations, strategic planning, and administrative functions of the Department, including fire prevention, training, suppression, and budgeting. The Fire Chief will also serve as the County’s EMA Director. This role requires a seasoned professional with extensive knowledge of fire service operations, a commitment to safety and community engagement, and a proven ability to lead and inspire a diverse team.

Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Vision:

Set departmental goals and strategic plans (including one, three, and five-year master plans) in alignment with county objectives. Foster a positive, inclusive, harassment-free work environment.

Operational Management:

Supervise and direct all fire department operations. Maintain communication with appropriate local agencies. Ensure personnel and civilian safety. Implement and monitor operating policies and disaster plans.

Financial Oversight:

Develop and manage the department’s budget in coordination with the County’s Finance Director. Handle procurement and resource allocation. Prepare bid specifications for grant opportunities.

Personnel Development:

Oversee a team of 50+ employees, including recruitment, selection, training, evaluation, and discipline. Build and support a team-based culture that is focused on professional growth and collaboration.

Emergency Command:

Serve as the chief authority during emergency operations, setting protocols and procedures in high-stakes situations, and communicating with appropriate persons and agencies.

Public Relations:

Represents the Department to other government departments and agencies, and to the general public. Coordinates public outreach programs.

Compliance & Policy:

Develop department manuals, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with NFPA 1021 and other relevant standards and regulations.

Qualifications:
Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Business Administration, Emergency Management, Public Administration, or a related field.

Experience:

At least ten (10) years in the paid fire service, including at least five (5) years of command experience. Strong background in firefighting, fire prevention, and departmental administration.

Certifications:

Valid Georgia Firefighter Certification. Current GEMA Certification or ability to acquire GEMA Certification within two (2) years. Hazardous Materials Technician Certification or ability to acquire Certification with (1) year. Class E or F driver’s license.

Skills:

Proficient in budget management, resource allocation, public speaking, and operational command. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to lead, motivate, and engage team members.

Preferred:

Master’s degree in a related field with at least fifteen (15) years of fire service experience. Georgia Chief Fire Officer (GCFOC) designation.
