JOB Hiring Range:
$64,599 – $67,828The Fire Captain protects Surf City’s citizens’ lives and property by performing supervisory and technical duties in fire suppression, emergency medical care, hazardous materials incidents, fire investigations, fire personnel training, public relations, and station management. The Captain also oversees housekeeping duties and equipment maintenance and assumes responsibility for the station.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
These duties and responsibilities are not intended to be all-inclusive. Employee may perform other related duties as negotiated to meet the town’s ongoing needs.
Supervises personnel by prioritizing and assigning tasks, shift scheduling, ensuring tasks are completed, conducting performance evaluations, identifying training needs, coordinating and presenting training for personnel, administering disciplinary actions in accordance with the Town policy, responding to citizen complaints and employee grievances, writing reports, keeping personnel records, maintaining a state of readiness, and communicating to personnel.
Commands fire ground operations during emergencies by directing subordinates in all aspects of fire ground activities, using apparatus and equipment for fire suppression and control, and ensuring the safety and accountability of all personnel and citizens during emergency operations.
Performs non-emergency operations and public relations and works with the public to protect life and property.
Perform administrative tasks by writing reports, serving on committees, maintaining records, and reviewing departmental policies and procedures. Acts as principal incident officer, which includes preparing personnel schedules, scheduling equipment maintenance and repairs, preparing and evaluating response protocols, and overseeing various special projects.
Oversee departmental activities at emergency scenes, including serving as incident commander, assessing situations and determining tactical objectives, evaluating performance, and making suggestions for future activities.
Oversee the department’s hazardous materials programs, including monitoring current state and federal guidelines, evaluating departmental policies and procedures, and recommending periodic changes.
Represents the department at special events, including parades and open houses.
Participate in ongoing firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical training.
Monitors and maintains radios, pagers, chargers, and communication devices, reprograms all pagers for the entire department.
Maintains inventory of all uniform items, equipment, radios, pagers, and trucks.
Completes documents and reports as needed.
Works irregular hours, including weekends, holidays, and extended hours as needed. Performs work during emergency/disaster situations.
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Working ConditionsEmployee is subject to environmental conditions, including the lighting, temperature, and noise of an open-plan office environment. The employee is also exposed to outdoor conditions when responding to calls, and may be frequently exposed to weather elements including rain, wind, varying temperatures, etc. In addition, the employee must effectively deal with personal danger, which may include exposure to hazardous chemicals and materials, fumes and smoke, intense heat, electrical hazards, confined or high work places, dangerous animals, extremely loud noises, hazards of emergency driving, hazards associated with traffic control and working in and near traffic, and natural and man-made disasters.
Physical RequirementsA portion of work is performed within an office environment, primarily behind a desk, and frequently includes computer operation. The employee must read, write, and interact with others in person, over the phone, and via other devices. The employee may move within the facility to access file cabinets, documents, office machinery, and other equipment. Travel is often required to outside sites to perform the duties described above and attend meetings, training, events, and other business activities. Work also requires running, walking, standing, bending, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, and/or moving equipment and injured/deceased persons, pushing and pulling various objects, climbing stairs and ladders, performing lifesaving and rescue procedures, and operating assigned equipment, including motor vehicles. Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
